....Noth talked about the unique challenge of acting on a show that restricts its concerns to the realm of the police procedural: "The danger comes when you try to force character into it, to get attention, where maybe it's not warranted," Noth observes. "It's hard for me to even look at the first six episodes of Law & Order I did back in 1990. You see a young actor desperately trying to say, 'I'm a character.' " Though the two actors appear to be mutually thrilled at the chance to share the notoriously burdensome task of filming a weekly hourlong series, it's hard not to see in Noth's words an implicit jab at D'Onofrio's acting style: His Detective Robert Goren is nothing if not a character, and an outsized one at that...

Thanks for posting. Dana Stevens is of course mistaken in her preference of Noth over Donofrio.
Cool name Virgil. I have to agree. I will watch it though when Nothi s on cause I don't want the ratings to fall and have Bobby leave forever :( that would totally and royally suck!
besides Noth is a good actor and quite comical.
and for those who don't like Noth, Fine you don't have to like him but watch the tv when it's his time to be on so the ratings don't fall and go out of the room to do something else;)
I agree vdofan, we have to watch and keep those desperate housewives at bay. When it was announced that Chris Noth was joining the cast Vincent said, "he hoped fans would keep an open mind." I for one will do that. Whatever it takes to keep Vincent on the show.
Been a Noth-phile since his stint on the original L & O. What a beaut! He is no Vincent, though. But I agree. I will watch on the non-Vincent shows to support it and keep the "wives" at bay. There's just so much more depth to this show than that one.
I believe that Ms. Stevens is reading more into Noth's comments than is really present, possibly due to her own bias. Noth is referring to 1990 - over 11 years BEFORE LOCI came on the air. LOCI was not even conceived at the time. When Dick Wolf decided to expand the L&O brand with a "Sherlock Holmes" style detective in a show that focuses as much on the criminal mind than the police procedure, he needed an actor who could play "a real character". (The original Sherlock Holmes was no wallflower either.) Wolf deliberately sought out D'Onofrio to play Goren and Balcer included D'Onofrio in the planning and writing stages, so there is an author (auteur)-character symbiosis rarely found on network television. They could have found no better Goren than D'Onofrio.
Noth is referring here to his challenge as a younger actor to put the procedural above the character. Now that he is more experienced, and now that LOCI might allow him some more slack to explore Logan's personality, we might get to see a deeper performance. I do not see a diss against D'Onofrio in Noth's words.
Goren and Logan are two opposite sides of the police coin. Barek will play off of Logan in her own way, just like Goren plays off of Eames. Both partnerships have merits, and if continued to be explored well, should provide equally good entertainment for the viewing public.

Nicely said in a well written post D.Flor I couldn'ta gree more.. and you know something I have never watched an episode of Housewives.. and the creator would probably thought I was joking but honestly I haven't and have no interest. thanks to everyone who are agreeing with me on this..
You don't have to like Noth, but it would be nice to keep the tv on so we can have the ratings go well. So we can keep Bobby for as long as we can get him.
and I am one of the few that do like Noth:) He is doing a good job so far.
I hope Mr Noth isn't taking a shot at Vincent. Vincent asked us to keep an open mind about Mr Noth, so I will. I'm not tolerant of anyone slagging Vincent.
I really dont think Chris Noth is having a go at our Vincent...I agree with D.Flor that this is the author's own bias...I think Mr Noth was genuinely referring to his own acting style in the original series....Look at the body language of the pair during their interview on the Today show, they certainly seem to get along ok...Or are they just very good actors???!! Anyway looking at Vincent's laidback style during that interview , he certainly doesnt feel threatened by the new arrival and was quite happy to take a back seat...Viewers in the US have to allow the ratings to slide just a little so Dick Wolf must ensure that Vincent stays with the show!. CI IS Bobby!
I'm very lucky that here Desperate Housewifes is at 09.30 and LOCI at 10.30 pm at the same channel! ;-)
I will watch LOCI every week who ever is on, I'm a huge fan of Vincent but also of the show.
Seems to me the only person 'taking an implicit jab at D'Onofrio' is the writer of the article. As I've said before, I have absolutely zero interest in Chris Noth joining the show, but if he keeps Vincent there, bring it on. However, I can't help but secretly wish the ratings would yo-yo downwards every non-Goren week, without putting C.I.in danger of the ratings-cancellation-zone.
despite early reservations, i've actually enjoyed watching Noth. And I'm not a fan of his. it's not like getting to see Vincent every week but it's still enjoyable. Just different.
i think the truth is, Noth *will* have to insert his character in LOCI. it was developed to be quite different from the other L&O shows as others have said, to focus not only on the Criminal mind but on that Holmes-ish character. The other shows are much more ensemble casts (which is not to say that the other characters on LOCI do not carry a huge part of the show, they do) than LOCI, and Noth may have to play up a bit. As he's matured, he can probably do so without over-doing. it's an interesting experiment to watch.
oh... i haven't watched a single epi of DHs either. i have no interest in it whatsoever. what little I've seen in snippets seems to glorify infidelity (though I understand that there are "wages of sin" paid for by the characters apparently) and frankly, i've lived the harried mom routine and don't need to relive it (though I love Felicity and her hubby, WH Macy)
Well ,I totally agree with Diane. Noth should be honoured to act alongside V, but that's just my opinion. Vincent's acting method is unpresidented and so is his charisma, but I'll play along and just concentrate on the episodes with Goren. I'm not one to impress easily. As long as V's still on.
