"D'Onofrionics"

Character study
This season, the Law & Order franchise did something it had never done before: It switched cop duties on Criminal Intent. Half the time, we'll get the show's founding detectives, Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe); the other half, it'll be Carolyn Barak (Annabella Sciorra) and Mike Logan (Chris Noth) -- yes, that Mike Logan, whom you may remember from the original Law & Order. The change was necessitated last season when D'Onofrio suffered from offscreen exhaustion, which is fair enough: Playing Goren must be exhausting, since he knows everything about everything. Clinical psychology, art, architecture, mythology, chemistry, animal husbandry -- pretty much every episode gives D'Onofrio a chance to add another area of expertise to Goren's resume. His wide-ranging interests and apparently photographic memory must be annoying to Erbe, since Goren's self-sufficiency leaves her very little to do; we know she acted as a surrogate mother for her never-seen brother (a workaround for Erbe's real-life pregnancy), is useful for baiting suspects who fetishize petite women, and likes to drive, and -- three seasons on -- that's about it. Good thing Goren's got enough tics for two characters: He uses his height to loom over perps, favours the "whisper to a scream" method of interrogation, and almost never fails to trick anyone into a confession -- with the exception of his Moriarty-like nemesis, Nicole Wallace (Olivia D'Abo). D'Onofrio is so merciless in his scenery-chewing that he inspired me to coin a term for his particular brand of histrionics: D'Onofrionics. And if taking half a season off is what it will take for him to keep his incisors nice and sharp, so be it.

I was just about to let off some steam thinking yet another paper was having yet another 'pop' at Vincent ("Scenery chewing histrionics")- then I got to the end and it's a compliment!

At least it's not someone proclaiming that Chris Noth is the best thing since sliced bread.

Same here, Diane.
The thing that some people don't understand is that CI is Vincent D'Onofrio's show. It wasn't intended to let Det. Eames have an equal part, even though it would be nice to have her more involved.

I can't "get into" the CN/AS episodes. He sure is eye candy, but he's not Vincent.

That was almost a back handed compliment!! All the way through it reads like they don't like Goren, then that one sentence at the end changes it all.At least one journalist likes him!

'Goren's got enough tics for 2 characters' yeah, and Vincent's got enough whoooa... to keep a lot of ladies blissfully happy.

Maybe it's just me, but even if they dissed Vincent, it'd mean he gets under their skin!!
I'm a bit like Johnny Depp's character in "Pirates..." because I believe that ANY critisism, means you're getting noticed. :))

Besides, anyone who questions this man's talent, just reveals themselves as a idiot.

Like I said before: in S4 Eames is having more lines and scenes than ever before, and we know so much more about her than what the article says ...

Having read so many comments on Bobbys great intellectual abilities I wonder why people bother to watch the programmes. I love the fact that he is so well educated, it `s not as though he knows everything about everything, but snippets. To me he can do no wrong, sorry but if you like someone you can forgive them anything, and I am a great fan.
