Rene Balcer, executive producer of NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent since its 2001 start, and a 16-year veteran of the L&O franchise, is leaving after failing to come to terms on a new deal.
Co-Executive Producer Warren Leight, who won a Tony Award for Side Man, will replace Balcer, who reportedly left amicably when both sides were unable to agree on his show runner's salary.
Criminal Intent this fall moves to 9 p.m. Tuesday as a lead-in to companion, Special Victims Unit.

*WOW*
Oh no...
This is the first story about LOCI that's actually worried me...
I think we need to take a wait and see attitude...the stories the last two years were not up to the first two years - with a tie going to year 3. But kudos for him for the excellent work he has provided.
Rene Balcer has been an excellent writer all these years with the LO series! Thanks Mr Balcer for all your hard, dedicated work with Law&Order,SVU and LOCI. Good luck to you with your future endeavors, whatever they may be!!
I was really hoping he wouldn't leave.
Thanks for developing CI to what it is today, Balcer.
Anyways, I'm really looking forward to CI in September, now. At first, I was looking forward to the mothership the most to see who was gonna replace Borgia and Fontana, but now, I really wanna see who's replacing Deakins, and how the new showrunner's gonna handle CI. Because a new showrunner basically means a whole different kind of show. You can see it with The Simpsons' Mike Scully and Al Jean, for example.
Please don't screw it up, new guy! If anything, please make it better (if that's even possible)!
ohhhhh sh*t
Oh my God-this is unbelievable-I think their nuts-I think Rene Balcer is worth whatever he wanted-if he didn't do the actual script than most of the storylines were his-I was happy with most all the stories-I think they are making a big mistake-will be very interested to see what Vincent says about this.
I seem to remember Vincent saying not so long ago that he thought Rene Balcer wouldn't stay with C.I, that he was 'too good a writer'. He's been a tremendous asset to the show and it's a shame, but maybe an injection of new blood isn't a bad thing?
Warren Leight has been with the show a long while, I think it is pretty safe in his hands. Whether or not any changes are made (as far as story) remains to be seen...
well maybe it will wind up being good in the long run..maybe if will give the show the boost in the ratings..i'm sure they will find someone that suits the show..well cant wait to see what it will be like..
Rene Balcer will be missed. But the show(s) must go on.
Mr Balcer has done some amazing work in CI and he'll be surely missed.
Does anyone know if Vincent has or will comment on Rene Balcer leaving CI.
