Emmys: So much for stability

Why does Emmy seem to avoid the dynamic stalwarts on long-running shows?
By KATHY TRACY
Excerpted..
Character growth and nuanced performances rarely get rewarded with Emmy nominations, a fact "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" star Kathryn Erbe readily accepts.
"While I appreciate the value of awards, I have gotten used to not being nominated," she laughs. "I've gotten used to having a not-so-flashy career. I con sider myself a blue-collar actor. I have done other things on television that might have been more appropriate for Emmy consideration, like 'Oz,' where I got to flex my emotional acting muscles more than playing Detective Eames, where those emotional moments are few and far between.
"For the most part, in terms of awards and in terms of the job -- because I am so grateful and so lucky to have it -- I have resigned myself to finding what I can to feel good about and stretch my own muscles as much as I can within what I am given, because it is what it is."
Erbe says that the biggest rewards come from the audience. "Almost everywhere I go now, there is someone who will say something to me, and it is incredibly gratifying. I am not the kind of person who is going to go to the luncheons or go socialize because I don't have time. I cannot really compete in the way that maybe some other people can. I'm a single mother of two just trying to live my life and do good work that I can be proud of. So every time the work is recognized, I am so deeply grateful. That alone means a lot to me, forget about the actual award."

Great article, we rarely hear from Kate.
Kate deserved an Emmy just for her performance in the witness box in 'Wee Small Hours' and of course, Vincent has been passed up for one more times than we can all count, most notably for 'The Subway'. Ah well, luckily WE know they're brilliant ;-)
"I'm a single mother of two "
Since when? News to me, well all the power to ya Ms. Erbe.
:D
Its too bad they dont get the good attention they deserve but then again, if they were all over the place getting awards...not sure if that would necs be better.
Well we love the show and thats all that matters.
It's always the same. The great shows never get the awards. Just like music, the good ones never get the awards or the respect. Johnny Cash never got the awards or the respect when he was alive. But after the Johnny dies, they have respect for him and get the awards. Kate and Vincent, the don't get the respect or the awards. That is too bad. Because they make such a good team together.
Yeah, I hadn't heard she & Terry Kinney got divorced. Can't find any stories on the web.
i have that same question is kathryn erbe divorced i never heard any such thing i thought she was still married please explain kathryn and i agree kathryn and vincent don't get the respect or awards they really deserve and it's very unfair i think
Great article. I really admire her honesty about her career and wish her all the best. Look forward to seeing how they will continue to develop her career in this fall's season.
I read the entire article and I agree. The more stable shows are, the less they get nominated. Would love to have Kate and Vincent both get nominated. By the way, I also didn't know that Kate was a single Mom.
Ive never read where Vincent said its "His Show"! more like if it wasnt for the cast and crew there wouldnt be a show. That ive read alot,( its not like the Vincent i know to be self endulgent, more like praising others) Apart from the show being created around the "character" Goren. Fan`s alway`s say its "his show" because of Noth comming in. Love to have some links to these articles please!

I think someone is just trying to start a 'debate' - I'll use that word instead of 'battle',which is more what it's designed to do!
I've only ever heard/read Vincent refer to C.I. as 'our' show and he went out of his way to praise Kate in the Today Show interview last year. Sadly, coming to thereel to bad mouth Vincent became something of a blood sport at Christmas, as we all remember....that's why we now have comment moderation. Annoying tho' it is, it's best to ignore - says she who's once more just defended his corner. Oh well, it is easier said than done ;-)
to some people this may sound strange but have you ever noticed that kathryn erbe never talks about what it's like to work with vincent do they see each other off camera what do they eat at lunch time on the set neither erbe nor vincent vance and sheridan never give any info like that rumors going around about vincent fighting on set just once i would like to hear erbe's opinion on that subjuct please erbe give us vincent fans some info as well as your opinion of vincent
not to be off topic but i live in north bergen, nj and today they were filming lo:ci..there were huge trailers with the law and order criminal intent signs on them..they seem to film there alot..i have actually seen katherine and vincent in the past as i was driving by..but i found it strange to be filming as i thought they were on vacation..does anyone know what that was all about?
Well i remember KE saying in an interview that by the time they shoot CI, she is exhausted and missed her family. Also said that with the 11 eps, she would enjoy the time to be with family. As for Vincent, he has always got his children and doing other projects. She did say she got used to working with him though, it took time. Being the perfectionist he is, i guess it could be trying at times. There is an interview where she says he is realy good at what he does. That makes it easier for everybody on set, I just see them as terrific actors and good supportive friends to each other, from all ive read. Plus the fact these 4 actors are very private people and dont say anything outside of the eps. They do drink lots of coffee lol, that was brought up in an interview. Also this of KE,
She has a very calm, ordinary life with friends and family."
"The longer I'm in the business the more I understand that the emotional ups and downs are definitely something I could do without," said Erbe. "We are a close-knit family. I've had to give in to the fact that our daughter likes a regular schedule and predictability. My ultimate ambition is to be lucky enough to be proud of the work that I do as an actor and as a mom and just be happy and content. I don't want to play Lady Macbeth."
