Review ~ "The Break Up"

Excerpted from the Christian Science Monitor

If it wasn't for some marvelous supporting turns by the likes of Judy Davis, John Michael Higgins, and especially Vincent D'Onofrio, there would be no reason to stick around at all. D'Onofrio plays Gary's sulky brother, and as usual he gives the role a wonderfully eccentric physicality, a hulky grace. It's always inspiring, as well as depressing, to watch a great actor give his all to tripe.

The hype of this movie is really getting sickening now. I had a feeling, just by watching the continuous advertising commercials on TV, that it didn't look like a funny film at all! The only good reviews that have been written so far is that Vincent played an excellent role. I really like Vincent, and he should have leading roles in movies. Hollywood, wake up! Vincent is a great actor. Give him the recognition that he's earned in the business!!!

It is never depressing to watch Vincent D'onofrio do anything! :)

The only reason I will see this movie is because of Vincent. I love all of his movies. No matter how small or big his part is.

Would someone please share with us how long we can sleep before Vincent appears in this please ;-)

I'm sure he did this as a favour to Vince Vaughn, but everyone is quite right, it's always a pleasure to see 'our' Vincent!

It seems that no matter how crumy the movie or the performance of the stars it has been written not just this time but in many reviews before about no matter what the role. VDO always gives his best. Way to Vincent. Maybe now even more people will realize what a great character actor this guy is.

We know that Vincent is a great actor, as I am sure the acting industry knows as well. But we can't have it both ways. We can't have him on CI and do lead roles in movies. We don't want him getting into health issues again. So he is getting the recognition he deserves, even in these small, character parts. But I do love their comment of hulky grace. I think it's a perfect description.

Okay I've seen it. VDO has 4 tiny scenes.

SPOILERS BELOW

The first is pretty early in the film at a dinner party (the one with Brooke (Aniston)'s brother mutilating Yes's 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart') Score one for Dennis's reaction to the singing. Audience I saw it with didn't catch it at first but they came along and it got some decent laughs.

Second, third and fourth all take place in the tour bus company offices (well one takes place just outside the office). The audience loved VDO's big scene in which Dennis lectures Gary (Vaughn) about the financial foolishness of giving up the condo Gary and Brooke have bought together while Dennis cleans out his ears. Brilliant!

The final scene with Dennis finally shows Gary cares about someone besides himself -- watch for how Dennis handles Gary's attempt to hug him. Got great audience reaction.

The real estate agent (Jason Bateman) really worked for me. Johnny O (Jon Favreau)'s big heart to heart scene with Gary is also decent. There's an okay scene towards the very end where Gary tries to reconcile with Brooke (at least Vince Vaughn works in it and finally seems not utterly repellant). Brooke never worked in my opinion. I just don't see what Aniston does as 'acting'.

'The Break-Up' is mostly schitzophrenic, confused and not very funny. 'Thumbsucker' gets crazy AND funny right.

Don't pay full price to see this (I saw a matinee and at $6.75 it wasn't worth it).
