"This is a different CI this season,"

.... says new show runner and Executive Producer Warren Leight

NBC Universal --
NEW YORK, NY – September 12, 2006 – A member of the Major Case Squad is kidnapped as "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" kicks off its sixth season in its new time period (Tuesday, Sept. 19, 9-10 p.m. ET/PT). "Blind Spot" introduces Eric Bogosian as Captain Danny Ross – who recently headed a successful three-year Joint Task Force on International Money Laundering and was subsequently promoted to the Major Case Squad.

"This is a different CI this season -- there will be politics and more at stake emotionally and personally for our detectives," says Warren Leight, Executive Producer and new show runner, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." "We'll see more character-oriented stories, we want to give characters a larger role going forward and see the affect and sense the toll this job takes on the officers. Detective Goren isn't always going to be the smartest guy in the room anymore."

In this Tuesday's episode, when the body of a former Ambassador's daughter is found brutally murdered in her uptown home, Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) question a jealous ex-boyfriend. But when another body shows up with a similar crime scene, Detective Goren's old mentor (guest star John Glover) and his
daughter (guest star Martha Plimpton) suddenly return to warn of a past serial killer back on the loose. The search gets personal as a member of the Major Case Squad is kidnapped.

Along with Captain Ross (Bogosian) "Law & Order: Criminal Intent's" sixth season features the addition of Detective Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson) as Detective Mike Logan's (Chris Noth) new partner. Partners Logan and Wheeler form the Major Case Squad alongside long-time partners Detectives Goren and Eames, who will split the caseloads week to week.

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is a Wolf Films production in association with NBC Universal Television Studio and is Dick Wolf's third installment of the "Law and Order" brand, the second-longest running drama series in the history of television. Wolf, Leight and Peter Jankowski are executive producers.

It sounds to me more like the show show-runner looking to (a) make a name for himself and (B0 up the ratings by shuffling the deck a little.

Some of the changes will have been enforced by the new characters, as well.

One of the criticisms of the show has often been that Goren always seems to know everything about everything. Despite the fact that this is also one of the reasons we love him, perhaps the writers wanted to put some real problems in his path for once.

Would be interesting to see just how smart Danny Ross (Bogosian) is going to be. If he is (or thinks he is) smarter than Goren, that could lead to some interesting exchanges.

Judas H. Damn - and I thought we Cancers aren't supposed to be good with change!?! I, for one, am not about to make assumptions about what this article means about the quality of the show nor the level of interest that I'll be able to maintain for it. The Goren and Eames side of the show, honestly, needed some refreshing. I don't give a damn about the perps, it's the inner-workings of the main character's mind that made/make the show interesting. How exactly is it supposed to be a bad thing that we would see greater dimensions of that mind? I'm sorry, but I'm not about to write the show off without even seeing one new scene, let alone a full episode! I'm quite happy to wait and see just what it is that I get.

I love all the pessimistic responses and the season hasn't even started yet. Sheesh

As long as the soap doesn't overtake the story, then I'm cool with the soap. Hopefully it will give the entire cast the story lines it needs to flex the acting muscles that we know they have.

I think it sound great...it is time Goren at least had some stiff competition. It is fun to see him be a know-it-all,but it isn't very logical. He can't win them all. Also,it is nice to hear that we will see the consequences of the job for all involved, after all,it is a job that would wear most people down and change how they see the world.

As an actor,Jon Glover is supremely good and I think he and D'Onofrio will have great chemistry on-screen.I haven't been this excited about CI in quite some time.

Well, I guess it's only fair that Goren won't be the smartest guy in the room anymore, considering he's always the best looking:)

It sounds great! It'll be interesting to see a more personal look at their lives. I can't wait!

Sounds like they're going to give us exactly what we've been yearning for...more ops for Goren and Eames to reveal their inner workings and private selves. But without going overboard on 'confessional' scriptwriting. AKA substance sans soap.

Cool that someone is coming along to challenge "Bobby's" intellectual hegemony...one of the elements I love is that little bit of insecurity Vincent has Goren show us when someone else insults his intellect.
My bet is VD'O will have a lot to work with and we will just love it.

Yes, sounds like the 'meatier' scripting that has been called for here, but the show will remain a 'whydunnit' first and foremost.

PS Leight has written for the show for years...he's not some new face with no history, so must understand well the 'character' of the show.

Hang on everybody...let's not jump to negative conclusions here.

The cast shake up on CI gives rise to new character interactions. How are the characters going to get along with one another?? There's bound to be some interesting conflicts.

Making Goren more vulnerable and not so infallible could make for some good conflict oriented stories as well. For example, how's Goren going to react when he's proven not to be 100% right?? It should show some emotion and strain in his character that we've not seen very often. It could be very interesting.

There have been discussions on this board about making changes to CI and it's stories/format. Well, here we go. Let's give it a chance before we blast it to bits.

It seems that after a series has been on for four or fives years, viewers get bored or restless if the format and characters never, ever change (no character growth). CI needs to shake things up a bit to keep the viewers guessing, giving us teasers about private lives that might impact jobs and vice versa, and showing character vulnerabilities. The stores don't have to get "soapy" just make the characters a bit more human and mulitidimensional. And why not plunge right into the middle of the story once and a while and make the viewers figure out the crime along with the detectives?

Sherlock Holmes wasn't perfect; he had his weaknessess. Goren should as well. And Goren needs a strong nemisis -- his Moriarty, if you will. And that nemisis could could in many shapes and forms.

Whatever changes the show has made has got to center around Goren's character and Vincent's portrayal of him. CI is Goren and Vincent. Any major deviation from that focus will sink the show.

I like that Goren won't always be right because it will give Vincent more to play with-remember this episode where Nicole set him up and someone that Goren accused committed suicide when he wasn't guilty and Goren came into the squad room and everyone was looking at him like he was a leper-it gave him a whole other side of Goren to play with and I think he will just love it and have a ball with it-my only regret and I know this will be forever is that CI should be Goren and Eames-sorry I do like Chris Noth but wish they could have done something to keep just Goren and Eames-maybe if they had given more time to Deakins and Carver and have permanent supporting players, like SVU does, it would have worked for Vincent and Kate with no one getting exhausted.
