Goren's Brother?

~ a suggestion sent in by Trixie_Duchess

Won't it be fun if you put "WHO WILL BE GOREN'S BROTHER?" thread this week, and everyone will be discussing it before the show airs his mother's first appearance!

keanu reeves is one of my candidates. he once played as VDO's brother in "Feeling Minnesota". will they ever choose him, or vince vaughn, as bobby goren's gambling addict brother? i may be wrong, but i am sure i watched somewhere that bobby stated he is much younger than his brother. anyone else know who played as a brother in VDO's previous movies?

I vote for..... no one

I want to watch *criminal intent* not *my family* ...

... sure I understand our upbringing, our childhoods, our families, our relationships shape the people we become, so little hints as to why they are who they are is fine, but it's enough.

I don't believe it enhances the show, I believe it dminishes it ... sorry folks

vdo we know you can act and angst is great in other roles, but not for Goren... where's the sharp guy who makes me uncomfortable either hitting out too hard or empathising with the least likely character... where are you?

No one gets my vote too. Are they going to put out a casting call for someone to play Eames' sister and kid brother too??

Bobby's brother is supposedly seven years older than him. Vince Vaughn would be a great choice except he's about seven years younger than Mr. D'Onofrio.

Are we rushing the sixth season a bit?

I am interested to find out who this brother is going to be, but I'm in no hurry to watch the family stuff so soon. It is almost like a
-soapyish-.

I kind of missed mr. VDO's bold and tough Robert Goren. Come back to the Interrogation room.

Be well, mr. VDO!!!

They are too young--Bobby's brother is suppose to be older than him.

I believe that Goren's brother is supposed to be about 5 years older...My vote is for Ray Liotta. He's a good actor who can show a range of emotions and could I believe pull off the "gambler" backstory.

Well, you can't really take LOCI to task too badly for introducing family members when the L&O franchise has introduced family members before, if they were key to the stories. For example, SVU fans are quite familiar with Elliot's wife & kids, and in fact, we've met a few family members of the SVU detectives. We met Lenny's daughter once I think on the original L&O.

Personally I like the fact that they will introduce Goren's mother and brother. As for who should play them, no idea.

Goren's brother has been alluded to only a few times (unlike Mom) and only once, as I recall, as a gambling addict. So why dredge him up now? Also, I read somewhere that vdo doesn't like "soap" in his dramas. NBC, stop tinkering!!

5:25 PM
Blogger eames_shrine said...

hehe, last week, we were talking about who this actress might be as bobby's mother. now his brother. there are million performers to choose from. however i don't think NBC is ready for that. it is too EARLY. they haven't filmed this "mother" episode yet. i don't know. it depends on how the storyline rolls. his brother might show up in the middle of Vincent 11 episodes. next year, maybe?

there is possibly nothing wrong to meet the family of the lead characters. i've seen families lately from other crime shows, and it does not mean they are "soapy". what if vincent was one of the writers who helped Warren with the story? let's just trust his work. we all haven't heard him complain about his "breakdown" behavior yet. nothing on the guest shows, interviews, etc.

as for the person who will play as a brother, whoever fits in perfectly, that's it and i am merry!

warren may bore some of the fans 'cause for what he did to bobby's new behavior... frankly, i am one of those what-happened-to-bobby-goren complainants... i don't care... as long as he's still VINCENT D' ONOFRIO on tv!!!

Blogger ebrown2112 said...

VDO could play his own brother...except with a mustache. :)

Actually, I, too, am not crazy about all these side-plots Leight is introducing. Although the thing that might bother me just as much is that the "CHUNG-CHUNG" is gone!!! WHY? There is no reason whatsoever to do that. It's the L&O trademark!

eames shrine comment: unless I have missed something we haven't heard VDO comment on anything for a long time.. Its been noth and erbe and is it nicholson. I'm curious about the low profile from him.. Maybe to give Noth more exposure time to get fans to adjust to him. I for one would like his take on his new characterzation. Possibly NBC should take a pole and see how viewers rate the emotional and family aspect of the show. It appears we are divided on how we, the fans, think the show should go.. I agree- I don't like the new twist but if it means the show stays on verses being cancelled I can accept it. I was in favor of new and fresh story lines but this wasn't it.

there is no casting call, of course. just a friendly discussion or suggestions about bobby goren's family since we mainly comment about vincent's past movies on this blog before, so why not loci, too?

some of you were correct about the said actors who played vincent's reel brothers. they seem young for that role. a little make-up to transform them into old and terrible helps. ray liotta is not bad at all. i'd settle for sean penn.

ebrown2112 - If they were side plots that wouldn't be so bad. What's pissing me off is that everything private has now been, and plans on being, pushed onto the front-burner!! I actually just tried to voice my opinion somewhere else of how Goren has been completely changed so far in the new season, but all anyone can respond with is how Eames and Goren's relationship is growing. Well, since when is their RELATIONSHIP the focus of the show???!?!?!!! Detective Robert Goren is just about half-dead right now, having been replaced with some poor cop named Bobby who's going through a whole lot of shit. I mean, immediately after watching Siren Call, it seemed a fairly exciting and interesting development for the character; but now, with this casting call for his Mom and now talking about bringing in his brother (something Leight did raise as a consideration for this season according to a break down of the Live Blog conversation someone gave me), I've just got to ask just what in the hell they think they're doing right now? Yeah, the family angle works on L&O SVU because it's always been part of the show. If they want to give us Law & Order SVU: The Second Coming, then just go ahead and kill the whole Noth side of CI and throw Goren and Eames over into the sex crimes division! If they want to give us LOCI, they need to slow all of this emotional drama crap down and let the character remain the character as developed over the past 5 years instead of changing his very essence just for the sake of storyline. You can show the Goren's angst, pain and inner turmoil without changing the whole damn character, removing any and all situations in which his strongly established resourceful brilliance might be used from every story you give us. It's just all pretty frustrating, especially, when getting absolutely, positively NOTHING in the way of news as far as the big picture character plan for Detective Robert Goren - not all this fluffy "You're going to see a different Law & Order: Criminal Intent..." high-level direction of the show crap: TELL ME WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH DETECTIVE ROBERT GOREN because, right now, it looks to me like you're getting rid of him. Otherwise, what's your damn hurry in getting all of this reveal out RIGHT NOW HERE AND NOW?

I don't know. The whole thing is just pretty much pissing me off today, if you don't mind me saying so.

So, yeah, my vote is NO ONE on the brother thing. It's not that I find anything wrong with trixie's having raised the discussion, it's just that I don't want to see the show keep going whole-hog in that direction while continuing to destroy the very nature of the original star character.

Vince Vaughn. I dont care that he's younger. I dont care if it'll make the show "soapy". I dont care if the brother is really a sister. I dont even care if he does the worst job in the history of the world at it (which would never happen because it would be friggin BRILLIANT). Vaughnofrio makes my little heart jump in a very happy way. And I like to keep that feeling.

On CI, we have had personal family notes about both Eames and Goren's family. For five years, Goren has been extremely confident, productive and brilliant. He does have family problems like we all do. Do we want Goren to be Superman and never have a problem and just always be at the top of everything or to we want him to represent a police officer assigned to the Major Case Squad of the NYPD, who is human. For five years, he's been carrying brilliance at work and brilliance with his personal life. And now if his Mom develops even more medical problems, how much can he take? I think the character of Goren needs to show a human side and that he isn't made of stone. And then when Goren gets some release and help, he can come back stronger than ever. Let's give Goren a break. As far the actor who can play his brother, I like Micheal Masden, I believe is his name, who played the character of Vincent's brother in "The Winner."

naydi- right on.. I was beginning to think I was the minority here.
If I wanted to see family members plastered all over the show like SVU thats what I would watch.

Vincent said in the TV guide interview that we would see a 'personalizing of his alter ego, but the approach will only go so far'.

Doesn't sound like he has a problem with it....Works for me.

Blogger SEP said...

Couldn't have said it better, Naydi!! (Are you listening, Warren?) Certainly Goren's character has progressed over the seasons, both physically and emotionally. But Season 6 Goren is almost unrecognizable. Instead of a progression, it's been a huge out-of-character leap.

You know this is a damned if you do and damned if you don't sort of thing, if they bring forth this issue that Goren's mother has cancer and then they don't ever have an episode wherethere is a small scene wit her in the show, then the writers would get slammed for a lack of continuity.

Everyone says the show is too much like CSI. Well I don't watch CSI. I tried it for a few episodes and just couldn't stomach the idea of a show that had Crime Scene investigators doing detectives' jobs (sorry I teach in a chemistry department that trains crime lab technicians, my boss used to run the NJ State Crime lab and no way is CSI realistic enough for me to watch). Anyway to me, CI is not becomeing more like CSI but more like Homicide Life on the Streets, that was a show that used jumpy camera shots, great music and yes delved into the personal lives of the detectives, while at the same time solving some great crime stories. And I don't think there's too much to worry about in terms of the soap opera element, as one of the head honchos said that the personal stuff would never be more than 10% of the show. It used to be a very sparingly used spice and now maybe it's dessert or an appertizer but I don't think it's ever going to be the meat and potatos of the show.

If I were to take the casting of Bobby Goren's older brother seriously I'd suggest Bill Paxton or Mandy Patinkin (unfortunately he's doing a series write now on another network) or Liam Neeson. All guys who are a little older than VDO, all have great acting chops (Neeson is as tall as VDO but they might want to drop colored contacts in those eyes of his, actually I'm not certain any of those guys have brown eyes)

4:16 AM
Blogger naydi said...

That's exactly my point, sep! There wasn't an attempt toward a happy medium or true character exploration. It's like we were just picked up in one place and dropped down into the middle of this Bobby guy's life 6 or 8 months down the road. As much as the interview statement that there would be a personalization but it won't go too far, it already has right out of the gate.

It has not been a fan-respecting, indepth and interesting trip that we've been allowed to take with Det. Robert Goren, as most of us who were hoping for more exploration were talking about in the context of the controlled, careful, character-cultivating nature of LOCI in years past. So far this season, all it's been is "Here's How We're Running The Show Now and This Is Now How We're Portraying Goren - Just Deal With It". Neverminding the fact that Goren was drawn to be a fictional character unlike anyone ever seen in a police station (Dietz, his pattern person, isn't a cop), if we go ahead and look at this on a reality level: We all go through stress and tragedy; we don't all turn into COMPLETELY different people overnight because of it. We instinctly fight to maintain control over any and everything we can, as much as we can, for as long as we can. Those who just buckle under what they're forced to deal with without showing that instinct are those who tend to be described to have not been considered "strong people" in the first place. That description does not fit Det. Robert Goren. The fact that the man would just go from being one character into being a totally different one with no signs of the original shown at ALL thus far is not something that makes me happy.

I agree with Regina on allowing Goren to be human and not Superman. The Goren character needs to be more than a highly intelligent, non emotional robo cop who never has any problems that impact his work or vice versa and who never messes up.

And I agree with Animaltalker about CI becoming more like "Homicide Life on the Streets" and not like CSI. I don't think CI has gone into the CSI zone. There are changes in camera and directing, etc., but I don't think the show has degraded. It's just different. I'm enjoying many of these changes.

I would think as actors that VDO and Erbe would be enjoying Season Six. They've getting a chance to do some broad range acting. That has to feel good.

Perhaps the mistake that CI has made is tossing too many changes in at once. I think it might have been easier on some viewers if there had been a break in story lines between "Blind Spot" and "Siren Call." For example, emotional episode, crime solving episode, then another emotional episode. But time is limited in TV and the writers have a lot of territory to cover in only 11 episodes for Goren and Eames.

If Goren's mother and brother are going to appear, I'd rather they both be "unknowns," and not "famous" actors.

I don't think the writers are going to go soapy here. I think the purpose of Goren's mother's death is a way to allow Goren's character to move on, a cathartic release of a long time burden that was holding part of him back. I wouldn't be surprised if the brother shows up just long enough to either reconcile with Goren or make a final, permanent break. In and out. Story line concluded for all characters concerned.

I think Vincent's size 13 will come down hard on anything he doesn't think is 'right' for Goren, he's already said he won't do soap, it's only 2 episodes into the season, so maybe we should all just see where it goes... and I'm including me in that comment!
If some no longer like C.I., or Vincent, it's a free world (just about!) and there are lots of other shows out there and hundreds of other actors to watch. Personally, I find VDO more interesting than all of them, even when he's just standing there! OK, I'm ever-so-slightly biased in his favour

As for who should paly Goren's brother, my vote is for Christopher Lloyd or a complete unknown...or vdo with longish hair in a joggingsuit, white sneakers, with a scruffy beard and a baseball cap. And, he should wear a med-alert bracelet on his left wrist along with one of those inspiration wristbands supporting something or the other (either cancer, supportive towards his addiction, or some other family secret yet to be revealed). :)

Maaaaaan, what's up with the conclusion-jumpin' up in heh'!??!(yes, damn tired, actually) I don't remember seeing anyone say that they don't like LOCI or don't like Vincent anywhere in this thread. People are just venting their various opinions of the show thus far, and wondering aloud just what is being done to it, based on what the new season's episodes have shown. I'm not happy right now, but, who knows, maybe tonight's episode will be more "grounded in LOCI reality" while still moving the backstory forward, which, I believe, is all any of us really want anyway. (the others will need to tell me if I'm wrong ;-])

No one's lit any torches and broken out maps to NYC yet, but it should be understandable that people feel a need to say what they feel about what they haven't liked about the show changes at this particular point in time.
