"Endgame" review

Wow. Hands down, this was the best episode of the season, and it certainly ranks among the top outings to date. The craftsmanship was just so far superior to what most crime dramas offer today — particularly in the way Killer Scheider’s death row countdown dovetailed with the deathwatch over Goren’s cancer-stricken mother.

I loved the whole format of this episode, the way we worked backwards to slowly unearth decades of brutal crimes and long-buried bodies. And it was made all the more disturbing by Roy Scheider’s chilling portrayal of a serial killer delighting in his murderous reminiscences, lovingly flipping through his scrapbooks of victims like they were cherished family albums. More.

Again it was a very touching movie, leaving us to wonder about the future of Detective Goren. The season finale will tell the rest of the story, if Eames will have a new partner, i'm hoping not but I think so.

Agree with everything Todd said. What an amazing journey last evening! For me, the best episode of the season, if not the series, in terms of acting. Must watch it again tonight.

Vincent, if you or anyone in your family reads this blog, THANK YOU for a job well done! You (and Rita) should get an EMMY for this.

I like Mr. Thatcher, clearly he is a man who appreciates Vincent's incredible talent. But come on...'Even if D'Onofrio returns next year'...'Possibly farewell'.

Obviously he didn't read the quote by Dick Wolf that appeared at his own site. "There will be no major cast changes at Criminal Intent'! I think Vincent leaving would qualify as a 'major cast change'.

Good morning all! And WOW!!! HOLY S!!!! I really think that Vincent deserves an Emmy nod this year. That was one amazing performance. I was absolutely riveted the entire hour and extremely annoyed at the commercials. Roy Scheider did a great job. The whole cast did a great job. WOW!!!

The saddest of the saddest of Bobby Goren's life, his mother dying will only leave unanswered questions to his lineage and who he really is and what really happened to his mother when she went out with Brady, was it really a car accident?

I didn't think it was a car accident - I interpreted that as he assaulted her that weekend the same way the other woman who survived.

I also thought that this assault was what triggered Frances illness - didn't either Bobby or Frank say she was never the same after that weekend.

So sad, and the only thing that was missing from this episode - in my opinion - was Frances meeting Alex. I would have enjoyed that.

I was hoping that his Mom would be around again next season but as far as him changing I hope so. I think it is an opportunity for the writers to deal with many new adventures for him and hopfully his brother. I hope he returns. Maybe next season they can do some major life changes with the Eames family. That would be interesting to watch. Kudos to Vincent and Rita and the whole cast for a superb episode.

Sharon - in one epi w/ Nicole, he says he was 7 when his mom was diagnosed so it's definitely possible that she could have started the symptoms years before, after the assault by "uncle" mark.

Great review for a wonderful episode. So many levels of how it ended were so sad; of course Bobby losing his mom, but in a way it was also freeing because he no longer has to live his life around her illness. But now he's left with questions about his father. Hopefully the brotherly love we saw in that one scene will carry over.

sharon-- I really wanted Frances to meet Alex, too. It would've been such a touching scene. And I, too, believe that the trauma of what Mark did triggered her schizophrenia. It was Bobby who said she was happy and smiling before, but after that weekend she was never the same.

That is what i figured, she was assaulted, she also mentioned about how Bobby's father was away alot and the Mark came to put shelves (so i heard, i am watching it tonite as well) and his father knew. Then she said she wasnt sure; which could suggest that Mark Brady was his dad. Frank was 7 and Bobby was 4 when Uncle Mark came into the picture but they also went out before she was married to Bobby's dad. Bobby has alot of repressed memories of his childhood, but he knows that his mom was happy once and then she got sick, and when he was choking him brady tells him to kill bc he has it in him, was he trying to say that he is his father? So many unanswered questions and now with both of them dead, there is no way of learning what really happened, What happened to his Dad? Did he commit suicide?

In a lighter note, I loved Eames now having her own knife as well and using it to open one of the shrouds-
And yes I would have liked to see Eames meet Frances-
What I wonder is did Goren have a DNA sample taken on Brady's body after the execution and will he have the DNA test done to get closure or will he let it go.
Tremendous episode.

"Endgame" was one of the better episodes this season -- which isn't saying much. There's no way in Hell it's one of the best LOCIs ever. I'm not sure that anything from Season Six would crack my Top 100. (Seasons Two and Four are the best).

I think DNA is now routinely taken from all inmates, so Brady's would already be in the system.
Perhaps the choice of Tony Goldwyn as Goren's brother -- someone who's so dissimilar in appearance -- is a clue to the paternity question. Got to hand it to the writers for throwing so many intriguing curves into the last Goren/Eames episode. Thank god there's going to be another season!

WOW, what an unbelievable episode, I am blown away... the best ever, incredible! We are left with so many possibilities for next season- searching for answers about his father(s), changes in his relationship with Eames, grief, there is so much more I want to see of Goren- so much more to delve into. With the fantastic reviews and feedback, I would say it is possible- wow- wouldn't an emmy be so great?

Dearest Lords of the Boob Tube,
O! Beloved Powers That Be!
To our Robert, a chance do give --
For his nerves, we fear, are fraying
Lest he unravel and moon the precinct
Running forth pantsless
Shouting obscenities at Ross, Logan, Wheeler
Or anyone who might cross his path.

O! Beloved Powers of Scriptwriting!
Our Beloved Goren thou
should not turn into the Universal chewtoy
But Lo! An Eames you should send
Upon him (interpret that as you will)
And have kindness of some sort
Of which type, we care not --
Only that you should let the poor
Bastard heal some before you throw
Him into the jaws of Season 7.

Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Endgame was so good last night. They really gave Vincent something to work with and it was a joy to watch. Emmy worthy performance!
Goren was so wrung out - he could not possibly come back from this without help. Would love to see Eames take the reins and help Goren heal. That would make a good subplot for the upcoming shows.
