Frances Goren Library Project

We received the following email early this morning, and subsequently contacted to verify it. This afternoon we received an email from a reader stating that this information has been posted on Criminalmaster Proboards by the same person who sent the email to us, nick2oh. is a legitimate organization and worthwhile cause. If you wish to donate, you may do so online directly on their site.

I wonder if I could enlist your help in a charitable project. The
following message, which I posted on another site with that site's
permission, explains what I have in mind. If it passes muster with
you, could I (or you) post it on the reel blog?

Many Thanks
Rene Balcer

This is a message from Rene Balcer:

I'd like to enlist your help with a charitable project. Please bear
with me.

For a few years now, I've been supporting an organization called Room To Read ( The organization builds libraries, readings rooms and schools in developing countries in Asia and Africa. They give scholarships to young girls, and publish native- language books for kids. You can read all about them at

Long story short, since Frances Goren was a librarian, I thought it might be cool and useful for the LOCI community to raise funds to build a Room To Read library. Once built, Room To Read will put a dedication plaque on the library in honor of Frances Goren from fans of LOCI or from Bobby Goren. The wording would up to the fans. I will match dollar-for-dollar every contribution made to the fund for the library.

Donations can be in any amount, $5 and up. There are a number of ways to make a donation but the simplest is either by check or by credit card on-line. I've included the instructions below. The key thing is to clearly mark your donation as being in support of the "Frances Goren Library" project.

If you would like to get other LOCI fansites involved, feel free to copy this message and post it over there.

You've all been loyal fans of the show over the years, and I thought you might get a kick out of knowing that there's a library somewhere out there with Bobby and Frances Goren's names on it -- and that you had a hand in building it. Thanks to you, some kid will get the gift of reading. Thanks to you, some kid will get that great investigative tool -- a library card!

Like they say, give till it feels good.

Rene Balcer

I think this is great Mr Balcer. The children are very fortunate to have this type of project presented in their behalf. I have always loved books, as well as reading them, and made a point that every child in our family has a library card. I still have the library cards from all the states I've lived in, as well as cities, in Connecticut you can use the same card from city to city. Way to Go, good luck with this project.

Although I'm in the UK, I would like to donate with PayPal through the US site to make sure it goes to the right part of the appeal. If someone has done it that way already, can you say whether you could specify on PayPal that it was to go to the Frances Goren Library?

On the Paypal page, there is a box that says "Add special instructions for the merchant" where you can indicate "The Frances Goren Library Project."

I think this is a great idea-Thank you Mr. Balcer for suggesting it-a nice way to show your support for being a CI fan-
I also wanted to donate to some organization as I lost my best buddy on Friday night-my dog Buddy-so I will donate in his honor-I know that many libraries in Connecticut have children come in and read to dogs and it helps them with their reading-so hopefully it will help some child to learn the wonderful joys of reading and the imagination it allows-

As to deadline or target date for this project, Mr Balcer's reply:

"There's no deadline but before Xmas would be preferable."

Okay I have a favor to ask regarding this post:

If you have seen this message from Rene Balcer posted anyplace besides the criminalmaster board, here at The Reel and over on the USA CI network forums, could you leave a comment at the main page of my blog? I am working directly with someone from Room To Read and trying to help her track discussion threads and blogs etc so that potential donors's questions can be answered.

PS I am trying to get another kind of fundraiser organized on behalf of Room To Read that I hope will make a lot of VDO fans here very happy as well as raise a big chunk the funds necessary for the completion of the library. I'll tell you more when it's all been finalized and I'm hustling to get it done so a very great Christmas can be had by all!

PPS I definitely will be at the Washington DC Room To Read event on October 23rd at the South African Embassy. Hope to see some DC area CI or VDO fans there :)
