From not a fan to a leading lady

Erbe's adventure on law and Order

Kathryn Erbe is entering her seventh season starring as Detective Alexandra Eames on Law And Order: Criminal Intent, which makes its USA Network debut tonight at 10 p.m. Recently BostonNOW talked with Erbe, a Newton native, about the show and how it has changed over the years.

BN: Did you have any idea when you auditioned for the show that seven years later it would become such a major part of your career?
KE: I had no idea. This is probably embarrassing to divulge but I was not a Law And Order watcher. I had never as a NY actor played a part on Law And Order, which is almost unprecedented. My history with it is almost funny; my friend Nancy Perkins cast the show and I was doing a film in Los Angeles at the time, feeling like I would like to give up on acting because my daughter was 5 and I could not take the emotional strain of never knowing if I was going to have a job and never knowing where that job was going to take me. I was at a dinner party at a friend's house and Nancy and I were out on the porch together and she said, "I'm so relieved, we finally cast the lead actor for our next Law And Order series; Vincent D'Onofrio" and I said, "oh my god, who needs another Law And Order series?" (laughing). More.

What a great interview! Right on, Katie. Much as I love Goren, I've been dying for Eames to have more to do since I first started watching the show. And man--I'm feeling really spoiled lately. Between opening up the Times the other day and seeing a whole article about the move and now logging on and seeing all this. Wow. I can hardly contain my excitement for tonight. Someone strap me down.

Great interview with Kate-I think last season was also a big one for Eames and this season will be as well-
Goren and Eames have evolved into a new age Nick and Nora Charles from "The Thin Man" series and I just love that-
And as a fan, I love all the attention that CI is getting as well-

It's quite refreshing to hear her talk about how the change to only doing half the episodes saved her life - so often the focus seemed to be on Vincent's health. I adore Kate Erbe. She's a great role model for young women - do you think she realises that ..?

The fans "never seemed to like our show for the crime and the way we solve the crime"? Which fans has she been talking to? I care FAR more about the stories than I do about the personal lives of the detectives.
