AMPTP - "WHERE WE STAND ...

November 29, 2007

The AMPTP today unveiled a New Economic Partnership to the WGA, which includes groundbreaking moves in several areas of new media, including streaming, content made for new media and programming delivered over digital broadcast channels. The entire value of the New Economic Partnership will deliver more than $130 million in additional compensation above and beyond the more than $1.3 billion writers already receive each year. I'm sorry to say that it looks like it's still a good ways off until this will be resolved, folks.

The thing is, the writers are doing the groundbreaking right now, for artists in many trades -- many eyes and ears (and hearts) are observing and listening closely. Musicians, novelists, actors... all have a vested interest in what will happen with the writers' contracts, ESPECIALLY when it comes to "new media" and residuals.

This is a rather important strike on many levels -- it extends beyond a simple strike action because of all it implies for anyone who works in a field where residuals are an important part of one's income. Most screenwriters are freelance workers who may go months or years between contracts. Residuals are part of what allow them to maintain some semblance of financial stability.
