Pounding the offbeat
The New Zealand Herald, 2.14.08
By Rebecca Barry
Vincent D'onofrio has a theory as to why his TV character, Detective Bobby Goren, is such a weirdo.
"He's a mess, an absolute mess," he says on the phone from New York. "I think he puts his mind on his work to keep himself sane, even though he's dealing with mostly insane people."
Goren is a pretty intelligent mess, even if fans of Law & Order: Criminal Intent will have noticed he's messier than usual.
What started out on paper as a Sherlock Holmes-type role soon morphed into a man who stares at people, pauses in funny places, cocks his head to the side or erupts in spontaneous anger - mannerisms that suggest he has more in common with a previous role as a psychotic killer in The Cell than a detective.
There are even inklings of Goren's feelings being hurt when people tell him what a "wack job" he is. Full article
Thanks Linda!

Marvelous article. Alone do not I agree when VDO says that the show can exist without him. That never.

Thank you-great article-always nice to read a current interview with Vincent-
But do have to disagree with Vincent on the show going on without him-
No way-
Regi.
"I've always been pretty good at sussing out shady characters because I come from the street, but not in the way that Goren does. I mean it's all written in a very clever way. Cops love to watch this show. New York cops anyway.”
Sussing!! Is that a NY term? I’ve never heard that before but if he’s good at it well then it must be good.
We’ll never know what he sings in the shower and we’ll never see him being romantic on LOCI, but that’s fine with me.
This article is dated tomorrow (New Zealand time) but I it seems like some of this is old information
Thankyou.
This is a great interview to have at this point in time.
And great to see him give credit to Leight who has taken the show in this distinctive direction.
Good to see he still has such interest and commitment for the show, especially to do the " happy suff or downbeat", that he came from the street and understands it well.
Season Seven is powerful work, some of LOCI's best.
But he is wrong. The show cant survive without him.He and it are joined at the hip!
I look forward to seeing him as Goren, hopefully with his many changing moods, so that his acting muscles can be stratched, so that he remains interested.
What a treat, to wake up to a brand new interview with Vincent!
Great to hear that they plan on exploring Goren's mom further (meaning is Brady Daddy?) and that VDO still is happy to be on CI.
Thank you for this wonderful Valentine Day gift!
And Vincent is LOCI, so if he goes so do I.
I love your devotion Texasfan regarding the sussing. I've never heard it before either.
This was a great interview, I love Goren and whatever he is going through is ok. I know that one day it will all be ok, and no he does not need a romantic interest that would just complicate things. So be as you are Bobby and we will wait until it comes together for you. And thank you Vincent for the interview.
Sussing-to infer, discover or size up-
I didn't know what it meant either and had to look it up-
Regi.
We often 'suss' things out in the UK (i.e. find out what they mean).
What's the betting that someone somewhere picks up on Vincent's comment about the show can exist without him, and turns it (probably over at the USA Board) into a hue and cry about Vincent wanting to leave, even though that's not what he said.
I love the added insights into the characters we're seeing now, and if it keeps the actors happy, I'm even happier!
