Mr. Big's Exit: Chris Noth Done With 'Law and Order'

Fox News, 6.26.08
By Roger Friedman

Sources tell me Noth is leaving the series he's been with for five seasons, splitting leading-role duties with Vincent D'Onofrio. His replacement will be Jeff Goldblum, who comes to TV from a long film career that includes "The Fly" and "Independence Day."

Noth, as Detective Mike Logan, was a member of the original "Law and Order" cast when it started 18 years ago. He left the show, returned, and then joined "Criminal Intent" originally opposite Annabella Sciorra in 2005 after pumping up his career considerably as Mr. Big in the HBO series "Sex and the City."

I never watched the epis with Noth anyway. And if this means that season 8 is the last season of L&O:CI or that D'Onofrio is moving on, nothing lasts forever. We've had a great run. I just hope they don't kill Goren or make him break down. I want him to fall in love and retire. (Go be happy, Bobby.)

After watching "5 Minutes Mr. Welles," I'm interested in seeing more of VD'O's vision behind the camera.

Of course, the animal in me hopes VD'O continus in front of the camera until we are both too old to care.

oh yes, more of his artistic work where he can really show his gifts. He is too contrained by the format of LOCI and it is true that it is in danger of becoming a cliche, the further it moves from its source. Its the same for all programmes as they extend.

Wouldnt we all like to see him in a full length feature film, something different that stretches his acting muscles.

I don't have the same enthusiam when I watch the Noth episodes as much as the Goren/Eames episodes so I'm really not that upset that he is leaving...I think Jeff Goldblum would be a great replacement..Lets just say Now I have a little more interest in watching the non VDO/KE episodes as opposed to before if I missed it .....I could care less....

Oh gosh. tami & janethyland, I'm in complete agreement with both of you. And while I'm not a huge Logan fan, I have no interest in Jeff Goldblum. Are they planning on calling the show
Law & Order: Quirky & Quirkier?
I wish VDO and KE could do the 16 eps themselves.

I thought the word was that Dick Wolf had fired Noth - again? This article makes it sound like he just left, which is a bit odd when they're so close to finishing up Season 7. He could have left during the writer's strike if he felt that strongly about it.

Given that the 2 movies Vincent made in 2007 aren't slated for release until 2009, I'm sorry, I'm not ready yet to wait two years for my dose of D'Onofrio. Long may LOCI continue - or at least, may it continue for as long as Vincent and Kate are happy to do it. If Noth is moving on, thanks to him for stepping in when he did, or Vincent would have left, but he's not irreplaceable - although I can't imagine Jeff Goldblum on the show *scratches head in bewilderment*

I like Jeff Goldblum and along time ago he did a detective show with Ben Vereen "Tenspeed and Brown Shoe that I loved. I wasn't quite as keen on Raines but 'm sure he can handle TV and he genre.

One of the trademarks of all the Law and Orders is cast changes, they happen all the time and the shows keep rolling along. No reason to believe CI won't continue to thrive with the addition of Jeff Goldblum.

I know most people here are big D'Onofrio fans--me too. But I actually will miss Logan--I've always liked him as Mike Logan. But I am also a big fan of Goldblum--this should be interesting. I'm looking forward to it.

I think Jeff Goldblum is going to be great on LO-CI. I think he is great and funny too.

I always watched Logan's episodes as well as Goren's and does anyone remember that Jeff Goldblum just had a series as a quirky detective, where he was basically mimicking Goren and it lasted like two episodes-
I think Dick Wolf is making a big mistake by letting Chris go-
He stepped in to CI when he was needed and how often do they expect the actors to take pay cuts or freezes-they alread did that last season-
I think it was beter having two detectives who had different styles, remember together in lock down in the prison facing the corrupt guards-
If Chris really wanted to move on, then I wish him the best-
Perhaps Wolf should do what he should have done before and build a supporting cast around Goren and Eames similar to the way SVU runs and have they do all the episodes-
The supporting cast would take a lot of the pressure off Vincent and Kate-

Noth said in the NY post that he had taken Logan as far as he could and it was time to move on, the decision was mutual.

As far as Jeff Goldblum goes...He is an actor, I'm sure he can play a wide range of characters, not just the quirky ones.

I have always liked the character Mike Logan from the original l & o, and I was thrilled they put him on C.I. the last 3 seasons. I'm sorry to see Chris Noth leave. I'll still watch Bobby, but the replacement cop for Logan is a crappy choice. Jeff Goldblum?
