Goldblum a better fit on Law & Order

Calgary Herald, 7.7.08
By Alex Strachan

By now, we've all heard the news: Chris Noth is out, Jeff Goldblum is in on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. So, now who's weirder -- Jeff Goldblum or Vincent D'Onofrio?

Yes, it's true. Chris Noth, one of the original veterans of the Law & Order TV universe, is leaving the force once again.

Noth's place will be taken by Jeff Goldblum when Law & Order: Criminal Intent returns for its eighth season later in the year, the showbiz trades reported last week.

D'Onofrio -- to my mind, a mesmerizing, almost hypnotic performer to watch, though not everyone agrees -- has been chewing the scenery in a major way, as his Det. Goren wanders more and more into his own private universe.

Det. Logan, on the other hand, has been the very picture of normality, which might have been part of the problem. Perhaps Noth-as-Logan was too normal.

Goldblum, on the other hand, with his virtually unlimited repertoire of nervous tics and physical mannerisms, should fit right in on Planet D'Onofrio.

There is something about this article, although it is hardly universe-shattering, that made me feel faintly uncomfortable. No - scrub that - decidedly uncomfortable.

But I haven't worked out what, yet.

I appreciate the somewhat praises of Vincent but I will miss Chris and will just have to wait and see-
Perhaps Goren vs. another type of Goren is not the way to go-
If I could talk to Dick Wolf, I would say to him, have you ever considered asking Vincent and Kate to do all the episodes again, but this time offering them a multiple supporting cast like SVU, which would take more of the workload off of them-

I too find the article disconcerting...however I think that "Planet D'Onofrio" would make a nice t-shirt!

I don't find this article disconcerting. Just because Jeff Goldblum has played quirky in the past, doesn't mean he'll do that on CI. For all we know he may go in an entirely different direction.

I think it could work out well. Goldblum could slip into the role that used to be "quirky Goren" and take over the show, thereby freeing up VDO to do something really interesting! Best of both worlds IMO. VDO wokring to his potential and the show returniong to greatness!
