Hey, Emmy voters! Don't forget ...

July 16, 2008 | Here's what we know about the Emmy nominations, which the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will announce on Thursday morning: Katherine Heigl will assuredly not be nominated. We also know -- thanks to an early short-list announcement from the Academy -- which shows are officially in contention for outstanding comedy and drama series mentions.

Another sure thing: We're bound to be disappointed when some deserving soul -- an actor or show that earns our love week after week -- gets overlooked. And so Salon's staff has compiled a list of people we're hoping to see get congratulatory wake-up calls from their agents later this week. From our lips, to Emmy's ears.......

-excerpted-

Vincent D'Onofrio, NBC's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (Lead actor in a drama series)
Most actors in procedural shows begin to resemble the civil servants they portray. They show up, hit their marks, clean off their desks and head home. Vincent D'Onofrio is one of the few to suggest that what's going on in his head is as interesting as what's inside the chalk outlines. As detective Robert Goren, he takes a clichéd conception -- the quirky detective-genius who makes connections no one else can -- and invests it with a dark and private meaning. D'Onofrio's mannerisms can be off-putting at first, but he's unafraid to be genuinely strange, and when the emotional stakes deepen -- a rarity for a Dick Wolf show -- D'Onofrio always comes up with the goods. (His scenes with Rita Moreno, as his dying mom, were particularly impressive.) No arresting officer is more arresting to watch.

Thanks Judy!

Well said. Its about time this was said about VDO and what he has been trying to do with his character since season 4, the internalising of character. He and Leight have given tones and shades to Goren which are unforgetable and full of quality.

What a great description of Vincent's acting and depiction of Goren-
Will he be nominated-
No, I don't think so-if he wasn't nominated last year along with Rita Moreno and Roy Sneider, then they are just overlooking great acting-

I say we start an on line petition to have him nominated.

He is the first of four reasons the show has come this far,
the second being kate, the third being courtney and the fourth being jamey.
with out that team setting the tone from the beginning and making it all work, the show would have been canceled long ago.
no one else could have taken that role and made Goren as believably brilliant as vince has.
no one else would have been able to pull that off. every single thing vince invented for
Goren has worked, from the slight studder, to the tilt of his head, to that lean, to slamming his fist on the desk, circling the perps as he whispers their motives into their ear,Goren knowing the smells, sounds tastes and substances to everthing known to man thanks to his life in the military, reading the smithsonian, his mom mental illness and his trusty library card.....

no one else could have done it. not like this.

and even now on the way to the 8th season, he still keeps you at the edge of your seat

I here by nominated Vincent D'Onofrio best lead actor on a tv drama series.

all in favor....

Beautifully put by the author. I hope Vincent gets an opportunity to read that excerpt.

Vincent deserves a nod, but our guy doesn't care to politic for it, so...
He shouldn't have to, He is THAT good but alas that is Hollywood. Perhaps they'll surprise my cynical view of their world. I hope so.

won't happen unless the academy splits the drama into two sections shows that are character driven and shows that are plot driven, because there is so much time devoted to catching the bad guy they character development on a show like Law & order takes a back seat and has to be so nuanced that only people who watch it from season to season really get to appreciate it.

Procedurals and other similar plot driven shows are always in the minority in the nominations wait and see.

He's a class act and deserves an Emmy. What a shame he will once again be passed over. He makes Goren real and believable.

I have my fingers crossed.

I have my legs crossed.

I have my EYES crossed (well, Vincent does that to me anyway.)

I’m among the ones who were baffled and annoyed by Goren and by Vincent’s acting at first. I felt irritated by both and by the peculiar “taste” of the storylines.
It took me a while to understand how unique, complex, genuine and intense Goren is and how perfectly coherent with the character is Vincent’s performance. I couldn’t without them and the show anymore.

Now that the emmy nominations are out you can see what I mean. The same people get nominated year after year, even when they haven't done anything all that great. Only SVU manages to get any attention from the academy from the Wolf shows

You should all write to TV guide and other entertainment shows to let them know how you feel about it

It's so hard to lose hope...Even if your dreams are shattered over and over again...Last year Tony Shalhoub litteraly asked the emmy voters to "öpen their hearts"...!! I was planning on asking them to öpen their MINDS and their EYES" so maybe-just maybe- they could see mr. "D'Onofrio's telant and- above that- hard work, year after year after year...But then something downed on me:"Eureka!!!! They're wiser than us normal people! They're the experts, the "know-alls"!! They've got a plan too: Ignoring Vincent for some twenty more years, then giving him a "Lifetime Achievement Award"!!!!! Superb now, isn't it?!! It's like: "Um...Dude; we always kinda liked ya; but we liked the others BETTER....!!!! Now, there you are... No hard feelings; eh?".....If you don't believe me, just look back and name all the geniun talents that've been treated this way.....I just wish that somehow Vincent comes across these comments, and has the time- and the patiece!- to read them, and just know that "people understand"...
