Black and Blue

Vanity Fair, 8.25.08

Black and Blue
by James Wolcott

"...The dramatic peak of Sunday night's viewing wasn't the submersive emotions dulled from rusty disuse on Mad Men (which more and more seems like a simulation exercise) but the phenomenal season-end arc climax on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, in which all of the pieces were cleared from the chess board in an Oedipal showdown between Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and his mentor, played with seedy, reedy panache by John Glover, dres sed in the stained white of a disreputable Southern lawyer. The psychic clash of Goren's sunken-vessel misery and Glover's glinty-eyed dementia against the bluish confines of the interrogation room elevated the series to an existential plane without losing the edge of glee that comes from actors seizing the electric moment. (I also enjoyed seeing Ilana Levine, whom I met on the set of Robert Altman's Tanner '88, in the early scenes with Goren's ravaged brother, played by Tony Goldwyn.) Taking Goren back to tainted zero (no mother, no brother, no mentor, no nemesis, and a dead serial killer for a father), It sets up
the next season of Law and Order: CI beautifully upon return in November, when--in the other partnership--Jeff Goldblum's ostrich head will attempt to fill the spot vacated by Chris Noth. " Full article.

Thank you to Annabelle Leigh!

Beautifully described...

Unlikely as it seems, though, I don't think that this is going to be a "restart mode" for Bobby Goren...

Tainted zero— I like that.
Can't wait to see what masterpiece persona Vincent paints next season!

It's so wonderful to see Vincent getting some praise instead of the kicking sometimes reserved for him by those who claim to 'like' him.

Season 8 is going to be awesome!

It certainly was great acting all round. Oh, but I think Vanishing Act is called for, followed by Good Luck for non-Bobby fun.

I was about to say how inflated and pompous the prose was in that article but I see that everyone else liked it, so I'll shut up! :-D

However, it IS refreshing to see someone appreciating the episode to the same degree - at least, I think it is the same degree - as I did!

A lot has been said about the acting abilities of Vincent's eyebrows but please may I also draw your attention to his NOSTRILS in that final scene? They seem to have a script all of their own.

Glover certainly cemented Gage into CI history. The man is amazing.I would love to know how they liked working with one another.

Poor Goren.I just don't know what/who he will be next season.Just when he thought life couldn't get any worse!

But I liked seeing scary Goren come out a couple of times in that episode, raging Goren.I love it!

I admit,I am happy Gage took Wallace out.It keeps Goren's hands clean, but sure screws with his head.

It's nice to know that ep didn't just blow the minds of hardcore fans but professional writers and other folks as well.

The entire cast and the material they worked with was just brilliant. I'm still recovering from the whole experience :-p
