Chris Noth bids a second farewell to 'Law & Order'
By Bill Keveney, USA TODAY
"It's nothing new when an actor leaves one of the Law & Order shows. It is when he says goodbye a second time.
Chris Noth, whose Detective Mike Logan was an original character on Law & Order, will depart Sunday from his second L&O series, Law & Order: Criminal Intent (USA, 9 ET/PT)..."
-excerpted-
"Noth wasn't available for comment, but Wolf says he had expressed frustration as an actor on CI, as he had on L&O. "Unfortunately, I don't think I ever took that stuff that seriously. It's just part of his persona. … A lot of actors get frustrated, and I can understand why. One of Jerry Orbach's phrases was, 'Dick, can't somebody die in my arms so I can get an Emmy nomination?' " ...
"The departure of Noth is "in the great tradition of (franchise) leave-takings, not on the same drop-your-teeth level as some have been, but I think it's pretty satisfying," Wolf says..." Full article

Sounds like the door is still open for a possible Noth return to the franchise in the future.
Wolf says there is no such thing as an "indispensable person, let alone actor. With respect to LOCI, I beg to differ. Without Vincent D'Onofrio's Bobby Goren character, LOCI would very quickly cease to exist. I wish Chris Noth all the best but thankfully the show will go on.
To Dick Wolf-
Every person is indispensable-
And as far as actors, I doubt that CI would survive if Vincent ever left-
Now to Chris/Mike, I'm very happy that he is not being killed off-
And yes, maybe he will return to the franchise someday-
Great quote by the indispensable Jerry Orbach-
Regi.
In my opinion, it's obvious how Logan should make his exit. He says he's leaving to get married and a cop's pay just isn't going to cut it with his bride, Carrie Bradshaw.
Well said Regina.
Every person is unique and indispensable and not a series of boxes on a production line.Goren is integral to LOCI.
However VDO did say in an interview recently, "I definitely think the show can exist without me.They'd have to find a different kind of cop, some interesting character actor somewhere."
So the show might be able to exist but it wouldnt be the same appeal.
Well, I don't think we'll ever hear VDO say something like "Oh yes, without me the show has no reason to be"; he has much too respect for everyone working around/with/for him.
As a matter of fact, old Dick bestowed the widest artistic freedom to Vincent for having him in the show. I don't think someone else in L&o the franchise had ever had this privilege from the boss.
And waht matters most, this artisitc freedom is what really moulded the show to what it -luckily- is.
