Do You Have to Play Dead to Get Cast?

After casting extras on "Law & Order Criminal Intent" for 2 seasons, I’m still surprised that everyone begs to play dead. Strangely, the idea of playing a dead body is very attractive to many actors. I even know several principle actors who are willing to work as an extra if promised a posthumous role!
Unfortunately not just anyone is selected to be a dead body. All featured dead bodies are cast from photos approved by the director. I usually submit between 5 to 10 photos for one dead body! Sometimes the director will even have actors come in for interviews. Surprisingly, the casting of a dead body is usually the director’s biggest concern. They always have a specific image in mind, including age, body type, ethnicity, and even hair color. Full article

I can totally relate to this. Playing a murder victim on Criminal Intent means almost-certain physical contact with Vincent D'Onofrio.

Great article-thanks-love to hear what goes on behind the scenes-I always like to look and see if I can see their chest moving up and down at all-don't know how they hold their breath for so long-

Hi, I'm *new* here. This is a great site/blog and I really enjoyed this article. I've often wondered if I could "play dead" while VDO examined and sniffed me. With my luck, I'd burst out giggling!

Yes, I'm with Lozzie, that would be my reason for wanting to play a corpse. Though I'd rather experience "la petite mort" at his hands...
I've always thought it would be great to play a corpse in a Vincent episode. However, the minute he leaned over me, he'd discover I wasn't 'dead' at all ;0)
I was surprised to find out that you all had the exact same fantasies as me when you read this article......!!!But frankly, it's not surpising at all....!!! By the way, when a well-trained actor breathes, you can never see their chest move up and down -unless it's supposed t-just as you never see them blink, unless they're supposed to. A well-trained actor can inhale as slowly as a count of 40 and exhale just as slow...with thier belly moving, and not their chest. And yup, it takes hard work.
