Letter from CI writers Diana Son & Charlie Rubin

Diana Son and Charlie Rubin at CI Writer's farewell dinner
*******************************************
August 7, 2008
Dear CI fans,
Greetings from Charlie Rubin and Diana Son! This is our first time writing directly to you and we appreciate this chance to share with you some news and encouragement.
It's true that we are leaving CI after many rewarding, exciting and fulfilling years writing for this uniquely intelligent and thought-provoking show. We have had the pleasure of working for both Rene Balcer and Warren Leight and many talented and wonderful fellow writers. Not to mention our unsung but spectacular crew. We'll save our words of appreciation and praise for the cast for later. But since there has been speculation about our futures, we wanted to address them specifically.
We were both at the end of our contracts and knew at the beginning of the season that this would be our last. Not out of any dissatisfaction with the show or our roles in making it, but because we both have passion projects that we have put on hold while we've put our hearts and souls into CI. Since we both hope to write movies or create our own shows
we thought the end of our contracts would be a natural time to commit ourselves to our own work.
We feel confident that your and our beloved CI is in good hands with the new showrunners and writing staff - extremely talented, highly-experienced writers and directors whose track records bear this out. As the new writing showrunners currently live in L.A., they will be running the writing staff out of L.A. This is neither uncommon nor controversial. It is in fact, practical above all else. In any case, we both left of our own accord. Though it was bittersweet to say goodbye to a family we had grown close to and looked forward to seeing every day.
We know this is a challenging time for you fans, as there is so much change in process. But remember that writing staff turnover is always healthy for the continued life of a series. CI has been successful, and we can all assume that it will be the intention of everyone involved to keep CI successful by appealing to its current fan base and building upon it.
And you can trust that Vincent, Katie, Julianne and Eric will continue to do the extraordinary work for which you have counted on them. They are the most interesting and engaging cast on t.v, and it has been a true pleasure to work so closely with them. Wonderful artists and people. Chris Noth, who devoted so much of his career to the L&O franchise will be missed, but Jeff Goldblum is going to be amazing too. We had the chance to sit next to Jeff one day recently on set, while he was observing a day of shooting, and we can tell you the guy is psyched! He has loads of enthusiasm for the show, and is creating, with the new showrunners, a fascinating character for you to become captivated by.
We also want to thank you fans for your dedicated support and inspired actions during the strike. We couldn't have won without you! Thank you for the emails, the pencils, the phone calls, the sandwiches and more!
Writing for CI has been a fantastic experience. We learned a lot about just about everything you can and wouldn't want to think of! Mothers killing their children, serial-killing daughters who are just trying to get daddy's attention, incest, beheadings, bodies sawed in half, dropping bodies from the wheel-wells of airplanes… If we don't get arrested by the FBI, who are tracking our suspicious google searches, you'll see our names on your t.v. or movie theatre screens before too long.
In the meantime, keep watching CI. It will always be the show you love.
With thanks and affection,
Diana Son and Charlie Rubin

Wishing Diana and Charlie all the BEST in their future endeavors ... though they will definitely be missed. *sniff*
As a dedicated CI fan, I thank you for the letter-I am surprised and sad that you are leaving-thank you for all the brilliant stories and I wish you both well-
Regi.
Ditto to what Snarkangel says.
Hmmm - more changes. Hmmmm.
I was very sad to hear the news about the C.I. writers, especially Diana and Charlie. Obviously the cast had great respect for them, and stood firm with them during the strike. I'd like to thank them for taking the time to share this letter, and for all their hard work on the show and to wish wish them the very best of luck, and continued success with the new directions they're going in.
However, there's more chance of me waking up next to Vincent D'Onofrio in the morning than of me ever being 'captivated' by Jeff Goldblum ;0)
Thank you so much for writing to us, your fans, personally! I appreciate your thoughtfulness and encouragement, but you will be dearly missed. You have given our heroes the wonderful stories they tell. You have mesmerized us with your attention to detail. You have given us so much to think about. Personally, I was hoping one of you, or both, would take over the showrunner job from Warren Leight. But it is not to be. I wish you both the best of luck in all your endeavors and you have my gratitude for all the stories with which you have blessed us. Take care and thank you again!
Susan
Greetings Diana and Charlie
I hope we get a chance to experience your next life.
You've done a wonderful job with ci and you deserve to take the next step and do something close to your hearts.
I'd love to see great minds work together out side the box. perhaps you and vince and kate can get together a do a little something for a film festivle or even the big screen.i would definately pay for a front row seat.
it is your destiny to do well and fully enjoy your passions... what ever they may be.
blessed be

It's really surprising that the first direct communication between you and your fans is a farewell letter.... Some dramatic twist now,isn't it? Maybe not as brilliant and spectacular as those you fasinated CI fans with throughout the years, but still, one to remeber. The fact that you actually "cared", and took the time & effort to discuss your leavig with us, in the words as if someone's leaving their child with a caregiver (forgive me for being rather blunt) speakes volumes... It's obvious how much you both care about CI, and that you're not leaving it out of neglegence, but have made sure that it will be in good hands...Does that leave any room for complaints...?No. You're moving on with your lives - as we all wish, a very sucessful one, to be. Do we -the CI dedicated fans-still have our worries ? YES....!! The Unknown always comes in the same package as worries... As for now, we can all keep our fingers crossed, and wish the best for our favorite people -the magnificet and hardworking cast & crew that gave life to our favorite show....Thanks again for "caring", and wish you the best;
Saghy
many thanks to Diana Son and Charlie Rubin. You have both done a great job and we wish you much success and love in your new endeavors.
I have agree with Diane however, 'there's more chance of me waking up next to Vincent D'Onofrio in the morning than of me ever being 'captivated' by Jeff Goldblum'.
I was hoping they would use the detective who filled in for Vince in Purgatory. I was watching a rerun of 'Amends' the other night and he had a small part in it also.
He's quite a little cutie himself.
At first I thought this was a damage limitation exercise given that it was reported that the writers were axed on one of the forums. I would like to say thank you to these two writers for their excellent work on the show and, also, that this may put a stop to unfounded speculation/gossip as to why they have left CI.
Charlie and Diana, I thank YOU for the amazing work you have done on LOCI! As I've said before, the story is the show. Although I'm sad to see you leave, Many blessings to you as you begin your next adventure!
Sincerely, Lorr Evans
Heart felt thanks, best wishes. You will be missed.
Charlie, Diana & company..so sad to see you go. *sniff*
Thank you for your dedication and for making LOCI the best damn crime drama on television, ever.
Diana Son wrote two of my five favorite L&O:CI episodes, "Magnificat" (#1) and "A Murderer Among Us".
Charlie Rubin co-wrote "Stress Position" and "To the Bone", both in my Top 20.
I hope the new writers do nearly as well.
Diana & Charlie
Thank you so much for the many hours of entertainment you have provided with your fine writing.
You will be missed, but your fans are looking forward to your new projects
Best wishes
Arwen
