Chernin warns SAG against strike
"News Corp. chief sends warning to guild"

-excerpted-
With SAG leaders about to decide whether to ask members for a strike authorization, News Corp. chief operating officer Peter Chernin has warned thesps that striking is a lousy idea amid a reeling economy. "I think it's genuinely foolhardy to think this is an appropriate time to go out on strike," said Chernin on Thursday at a TV Week media conference in New York. "It would be devastating for the entire creative community for the actors to go out on strike."

Chernin also reiterated the congloms' stance that they won't sweeten their final offer to the Screen Actors Guild, which has been insisting that it deserves better terms than those in the WGA, DGA and AFTRA pacts. The two sides haven't met since July 16, and SAG members are working under terms of a feature-primetime deal that expired June 30.

...SAG's national board will meet Saturday [October 18]to determine whether the guild will send out a strike authorization -- as recommended two weeks ago by SAG's negotiating committee. If approved, that would trigger the mailing of authorization ballots to SAG's 120,000 members and the ballots' return over the following 30-45 days.

...The moderates -- who have been critical of aspects of the leadership's handling of the contract negotiations -- have not yet disclosed their strategy. It's unclear whether SAG members would support a strike authorization amid the current economic crisis, particularly since such a vote would require 75% approval among those casting ballots.

In a message last week to members, SAG asserted that approval of a strike authorization does not trigger a strike automatically. But the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers disagreed... Full article

I wonder if Vincent finds all this frustrating? He has always said in the past that it isn't about the money, for him. What do you think?

Lozzie cap;

I'll bet Vincent finds it frustrating....

He's proved to be a gentle, reasonable, rational guy.

I don't believe that he'd just think about himself -and that's what could make this a tough call.

Although he has 3 kids -it's strange, that most of the time people count them as 2- and lives in ny -one of the most expensive cities in the world- but maybe he's been wise, to think of a rainy day, in advance -which you probably know about, as much as I do; so wouldn't go into the details.

What would make it a tough decision for Vincent, as well as any other kind, gentle soul, is the blurry future of all the little, not-so-well-secured people, who -directly or indirectly- earn a living through this industry.

That's the first thing smashed, and the last thing revived, in a power game.....

They're still suffering from the 100 day writer's strike...!!

Of course, that's not a good enough reason, not to go for what's rightfully yours -there's no scape from casualties in a confrontation.....

But on the other hand, timing can be a determining factor; particularly in the power games....

Who'd want to be the bad guy of this scenario...?

Would it be profitable in the long run, to take the blame, for an economic nosedive of 120,000 people -not including their families- and the said "little people"...??

No matter how this'll end, both parties would have to continue working together to provide for the third party -the audience, as their customer.

And none of the three parties are "Goldfish", I presume, to forget the story of "the srike that came in the worst possilbe economic situation" after 3 minutes.

Also, considering, that Both inependent porducers, and the commercial, animation, etc. actors, not included in the negotiations, will practically have a royal ball, should there ever be a strike; it'd be wise to think twice, before taking the nosedive.

It's a tough call; for once I thank god, for not being an actor, nor a producer....

Nevertheless, I'm watching, and praying, for the people I love and respcet...
