SAG could strike in November

Variety, 10.10.08
By Dave McNary

The Screen Actors Guild could go on strike before the end of November. In a message sent to members late Thursday, SAG president Alan Rosenberg and national exec director Doug Allen told members that the national board will meet next weekend on the question of whether to conduct a strike authorization over SAG's master contract on features and primetime. If the national board approves, the leaders said than SAG will then need 30 to 45 days to hold such a vote among members.

"If 75% of the qualified SAG members who vote in the referendum support the strike authorization, only then can the national board of directors call an actual work stoppage, should the board decide that it has become necessary to do so," Rosenberg and Allen said in the missive. Full article.

SAG: Authorization does not mean strike
Union leadership seeks to assure membership
By Leslie Simmons

-excerpted-
In response to the letter, the AMPTP said in a statement Friday: "SAG negotiators seem determined to force another unnecessary, harmful strike. Why else would SAG negotiators be unreasonably insisting, at a time of national economic collapse, on a better deal than the ones achieved by the other Hollywood Guilds much earlier this year, during much better economic times?"

A strike would affect only those covered in the TV/theatrical portion of SAG's contract, including those in feature films, free TV and pay cable TV.

Other contracts, including commercial, TV animation, basic cable TV and basic cable animation, industrial contract and interactive/video game contract will not be affected by a work stoppage, according to the guild. Full article.

Thanks Sam!

I had a chat with a couple of folk I know casually, in the biz, and their feeling is that this IS going to happen, they don't want it too but the inside buzz up here (canada) is that it will :(
So, Im hoping it won't but I'm not going to hold my breath as I start to wonder about the ramifications of such an action in this current economic downslide and after the kne breaking affect f the writers strike, just as the business was/is getting back on it's feet..... I see a lot of Fall '09 babies on their way lol

May I...??

Dear, most respected actors;

There are very few things this humble fan of yours dares to hate....

One of them is politics; another one is passion for power.

Put them together, and -ew...!!- you'll have "power games"....

My dear, most respected actors;

The game's been going on for quite some time, now; and a lot has been said on the subject.

I've used the phrase "Power games" over and over so many times, it has a drab echo in my mind....!!

But the truth is, your financial -and mental- security is an important enough issue, worthy of repetition.

The fact that some actors, as well as some producers, are not affected by the -possible- strike, is both relieving, and frightening...

Some of your colleagues will vote on the strike -hypothetically- without having to take the risk of its negative repercussions.

On the contrary -with all due respect, to the mentioned actors, and producers- they'll be having quite a royal time, once their colleagues/competitors are out of the picture, as a result of the strike; even if for a limited time.

Hummm.....

Food for thought....!!

And I won't even begin to tell -once more- the story of the old man, who lost his jacket in an irrelevant fight, only to figure that the fight might've been a hoax about his jacket all along....

This whole scenario, this "clear and present danger" is clearly present; and definitely real.

It's much more sophisticated, than any of the tv's reality shows.

It looks like one of Agatha Christi's novels; can't really tell how it'll end, until I turn to the last page; but already see Hercule Poirot's grimm face, saying:"The murderer is among us"....

I -your humble fan, on the other side of the world- am watching, and praying, for you to outsmart the "bad guys" of this story.......

And here's a hint: One of them is called "Ëconomiczilla".

Watch out, and good luck;

Your worried fan, on the other side of the world;

Saghy

Well it's up to the actors-whomever the new President of the U.S. will be, they will have a hell of a job as it is, so a major strike will be some help to the new administration-nothing like making a matter worse than it already is-
