Striking Developments

"As world stock markets falter, SAG considers a work stoppage."

For several years, Scott Winters has supported his wife and two children by working as an actor. Since midsummer, however, when a contract stalemate between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers began to harden, the actor's steady stream of screen work has nearly dried up. "It's been like shutting off a spigot," said Winters, a Providence, R.I., resident who has roles in the Showtime series Brotherhood and the upcoming Mel Gibson movie Edge of Darkness. "I think we had six or eight studio films in [Providence] up until the summer…and now there's one."

Because there are far fewer jobs, actors who live and work outside of Hollywood can be more vulnerable to the vagaries of show business than their West Coast counterparts. But every performer around the country could soon feel the squeeze if SAG launches a strike against its employers, a possibility that inched closer to reality last week when the guild's negotiating committee passed a motion asking the national board of directors to send a referendum for strike authorization to members. The next national board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 18. Full article

Is this the small voice (of reason) in the wilderness?

It seems like for a lot of jobbing actors, striking for MORE money is like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, if it means losing work and wage packets in doing so.

Hopefully Vincent and Kathryn (and the other regulars on LOCI) are financially stable enough to be able to weather a strike - nto to mention the latest fiscal problems in the USA. But even so I am praying a strike can somehow be avoided.

Um.....

Uh.......

Is there anything left to say, really...??

Looks like Mr. Solomon, Mr. Winters and I, are on the same page.

As for Vincent or Kathy, I seriously doubt that they wouldn't worry about the financial security of all the little people who -directly or indirectly- earn a living through this industry, and their families, even if they both are financially stable; which I pray they are.

But for now, apparently our dear Vincent and Kathy, as well as each and every other famouse, and not so famouse actor, and their humble fans,have a serious job to do:

Watch the next episodes of the new series "Power Games", and find out who's the bad guy....

It's the new reality show; you know; started June 30th.

Watch out, and good luck;

Saghy

The economic crisis has now become a worldwide one rather than just a U.S. one-I just don't see how a strike can do anyone any good at this time-
