Welles Review

These Films Sleep Well: Five Minutes, Mr. Welles (2004, Vincent D'Onofrio)
There are two films that act as necessary viewing in order to understand and appreciate the various nuances of Vincent D'Onofrio's directorial debut, the 2005 short film Five Minutes, Mr. Welles. The first is Tim Burton's tribute to a cult filmmaker and cross-dresser, Ed Wood, and the second is Carol Reed's brilliant UK noir thriller containing Orson Welles' show-stopping performance as Harry Lime, The Third Man.
The former includes a saccharine encounter between the naïve wannabe director Ed Wood, and the critically acclaimed titan of the cinematic arts, Orson Welles. Welles is played by the magnificent Vincent D'Onofrio, and voiced in a strangely perfect fashion by the multi-talented Maurice LaMarche. He sits at the back of a bar while Johnny Depp's Wood fumbles in sycophantic glee over the laid back Welles. D'Onofrio was so distraught over his lack of preparation for the part that he decided to film his first directorial effort as a correction for his performance in Ed Wood, and so he set about the creation of Five Minutes Mr. Welles. we stand and applaud while throwing dozens and dozens of roses at Donofrios feet.
bravo vincent.....bravo
if he ever does a play this will definately come true!!!
phillipo and friends
Does this mean that we just may get to see it on dvd???? (Crosses fingers and prays to dvd/video gods...)
This is a wonderful review - and richly deserved, and comes not a moment too soon.
Woo Hoo!! A fabulous review. Everyone who posts here regularly already knows, appreciates and expresses their opinion on the brilliance of Vincent's work. I personally am always thrilled when I read a completely unbiased review, especially a well publicized one, that totally shares our opinion. For some reason Vincent continues to be overlooked for the mainstream industry recognition he so richly deserves (Emmy???, Academy Award???) but articles like this indicate that word of his brilliance is still spreading. I love it.
Wow...
Doesn't it feel great...??
Wouldn't be this thrilled, had someone praised me, instead of Vincent...!!
And I feel, that this means even more to us, that it does to him.
Apparently, it's his very personal decision, not to be recognized by the hollywood mainstream -the "Sleepy Hollow"- or else he'd definitely know, how to mesmerize them, and play them like puppets...!!
Not that he doesn't care at all -who wouldn't want to be recognized for such dazzling efforts..??
He just doesn't really seem to care "THAT BAD".
And considering the kind of perfectionist he is, he'll continue to shine, more and more....
Folk, you ain't seen nothing yet...!!
Saghy
PS.: Folks, you probably already know this; but Vincent's "Five Minutes Mr. Welles" is on the YouTube.
There was much debate on the site about whether VDO630 was actually our Vincent, or not.
So if you've not seen it yet, try the hard way, and watch it on a crashing internet connection -it's even worth watching, while walking on broken galss....!!
Good luck;
Saghy
It is indeed on youtube but you cannot download it, which is why putting it out on DVD would be such a bonus-
This critique was articulate and intelligent and of course, right on, Vincent described a magnificent-
OK I can live with that-
Vincent is as brilliant a genius as Welles was but Vincent is reluctant to accept that label lest his personal life become that of Welles-
But genius, he is and appreciated as well-
Regi.
Ok; I give up.
Go to www.downloads.com .
Find "YouTube Downloader".
The rest you can figure out, true Vincent fans........
I know you're not gonna put it on DVD and sell it on the streets...

It's a few weeks since I've posted, I only post if something really moves me. And this wonderful review is very moving. At last there is one critics sees what we see and understands what Vincent was trying to accomplish
I have to admit I have a you tube downloader. And I have this really great short on my computer, but I would buy the dvd if it was released. I never download anything from the internet that I wouldn't still buy if it was released on dvd. I have all the criminal intents, but I'm still waiting for the dvds. You can buy them from apple, but only if you live in the US, which I don't, roll on a sag agreement which will hopefully sort out this problem.
Not long until November
Regards Joy
Good for you ViVienne...!!
Wish that I could say the same; that I'd buy CI and all of Vincent's movies, as soon as they'd come out on DVD........
But that's literally impossible, due to where I live on the globe...!!
Over here, you'd have to find films on the black market; and even then, there's practicaly nothing of our favorite guy, mostly mainestream hollywood.
But I'm hoping, and looking forward to the day, when all this'd change...
By the way, unlike you, I may post several times a day -ANYTHING remotly connected to Vincent "moves" me......
Guilty as charged, on both counts.
Could this mean that Bobby & Eames'll come to arrest me.....??
Huuummmm.........!!

Hi
Saghy, I live in England, but as I find that I can't buy a lot of the films I like over here, especially, Vincent's I bought a multi region DVD player and buy Region 1 DVDs, that way you can buy more of Vincents films that aren't bootlegs from american websites and deleted DVDs from ebay american sellers. A Multi region DVD player can be be searched for online, if not available in your part of the world. I now have a quite a good collection of Vincents films, but still hoping for more.
I am now thinking of upgrading to HD, but have to make sure that I can buy a multi region blu ray player first and hope that Vincents stuff starts to appear soon.
Regards
Joy
ps has anyone else noticed that they've checked what they've typed three times and still when it appears online there is always at least one mistake, bah humbug.
Hi joy;
Thanks for your info.
I'll try to make this quick.
I'm not really in the mood to deliberately get bombarded for posting "personal comments", though this is actually all about our dear Vincent, and the bitter fact, that for some of his dedicated fans on the other side of the world, being "dedicated" does not come so easy.........
The madia is strictly "regulated" over here, that means CI, or none of Vincent's films are ever aired -except for "Full Metal Jacket", "JFK" and "Malcom X"'s censored, "remixed" versions......!
The Video stores are strictly "regulated" too, so one has to seek help on the black market, which is on the contrary, "regulated" by hollywood mainstream bootlegs -as you named them.
Money transactions, of any sort - you guessed right- are strictly "regulated" as well; so no online orders for "restricted films".....!!!
Now, coinsidering that all these "regulations" happened to start 30 years ago - when Vincent's career had not even begun yet; how on earth do I manage...??
Good question...!!
By being thankful, to watch CI, and an occasional movie of my favorite guy, every once in a while, via my satelite reciever - which is against the law, by the said "regulations", too.....!!
On the other hand, the regional satelite network has a somewhat "regulated" taste, too -meaning they'll probably never air most of Vincent's films......
The funniest part is, I have a multiregional player, and can buy the best HDs here.....!!
So I'm one of Vincent's fans, living in a world of strict, stupid "regulations".......
How about that...??
My deepest apologies to all dear blogmates -including Vincet, should he ever read this- for having to be so elaborate...
There was just so much to say.
So....Count your blessings;
Saghy
With apologies to thereel for carrying on this thread, this will be the last time I comment on this, but where do you live saghy, it sound like an arab nation, I hope that doesn't sound racist, no insult intended.
It thought it was bad in England, the only Vincent films that can be found in the dvd shops on the high street seem to be Full Metal Jacket and Men in Black. There are less DVD available online in Region 2 than Region 1 and any special features have been removed. Vincent's commentaries on Steal This Movie, Happy Accident and the whole wide world are all missing. Do the powers that be think we're so stupid we couldn't cope with the special features or that we'll be so inflamed by Vincents voice we would run amok.
Back to the orginal thread, a DVD of Five Minutes Mr Welles with lots of special features, deleted scenes, unseen footage, out takes and a commentary would be wonderful.
again apologies to thereel
Just a Quikie for Joy:
No offence taken;
I live on the last point left of the "Axis of Evil"....!!
(Syria, Lybia, and N. Korea are not on the list anymore...)
Things are much better in arabic countries; believe me.
Thank To Vincent, and thanks to TheReel, for bringing us all together;
Saghy
