Prime crime now and Zen

The Age, 11.27.08
by Andrew Murfett

Life is, hands down, the best new American crime series of the past two years.

LAST week in the US, the mother ship of all current television crime procedurals, Law & Order, began its 19th season. Any way you look at it, that sort of longevity is an extraordinary achievement.

Its comfortingly rigid plot structure and ripped-from-the-headlines stories, combined with routinely solid acting and writing, make it the crime series equivalent of comfort food.

Yet aside from L&O's mother ship (and Jerry Bruckheimer's glossy, less lovable franchises), America's best TV crime solvers are a quirky, freakishly brilliant bunch.

They are supremely intelligent, regularly misunderstood outcasts of their workplaces. Customarily, they either have an axe to grind or are grieving for the loss of a dead partner or child.

In the past decade, the best example of this is Criminal Intent's veteran, Vincent D'Onofrio's Bobby Goren. His eccentricities were once played for comedic effect by producers. But seven seasons in, he has lost perspective (and almost his mind) grieving for his mother and brother, becoming an unhinged loose cannon. Of course, he still dependably solves his cases.

Thanks Linda!

I agree, val. Finally, a journalist that can see the point that ALL of the others have been missing.

Nice though it is that SOMEONE recognises Vincent's great work, Detective Goren is not, and never has been, an 'Unhinged Loose Cannon'. Makes him sound like he's a cop-gone-bad from one of those dreadful Charlie Bronson movies of the 70s!

I half agree. D'Onofrio so damn talented, but CI has gotten so bad, it has become an embarrassment. It is too bad VD didn't go with The Wire or The Sopranos. Both would have been better opportunities to showcase atypical talent.

Regi;

I'm watching Life's S1 over here, it's nothing like CI, yet, interesting.

And "S";

I've posted as "S" on this blog before, but it's not really a big deal; obviously everyone here realises that we're two very different people, 'cause at the very least, I take pride in being a dedicated Vincent's and CI's fan.

I wonder what made you feel so bad about CI...??

Some further enlightenment would certainly be appreciated; not only by this humble fan, but no doubt, by CI team.

And as bitter as it may sound, Bobby is a loose cannon, going down in his inevitable "Hamlet-like" tragic path.....

There's no escape for him.

But, if it's any comfort, I believe that he'll go down for something he believes in -somehing worth believing in; worth going crasy over, and die for -at least according to Bobby's standards.

Just hope it won't be anytime soon; it's awfully hard to say goodbye to Bobby, yet.....

Wishing the best of the best for Vincent and his true fans;

Saghy -The fan formerly known as "S"...!!

Dear Vivienne;

You're welcome....

It was the truth, nothing more.

I wish that we all read about James' success on this blog, very soon.

Thank God, for Vincent. It's his kind and gentle character, that brings us together.

And thanks to TheReel frends, for their great work...!!

LOCI has given USA it's top ratings. Fox & CBS should be so 'embarrassed' - 's' word, certainly not mine, or several million others. Bobby isn't Hamlet either. He's extremely unlikely to be killed in a sword fight, or at all. Even USA must realise no Bobby, no show!

Lizzie (I had weird problems posting this, so if this is a duplicate dear reeladmin, please delete this one).

I must say that the mothership (original Law & Order) is absolutely fantastic this season. a cast with chemistry, riveting plotlines, and excellent writing & supervision by Rene Balcer
