SAG-AMPTP Talks Break Down After Only 2 Days; Mediation Process Adjourned; SAG Will Now Seek Strike Authorization
The federal mediator had arranged the first formal face-to-face in months between the two parties. But, given the acrimonious history of their stalled negotiations, it's not surprising that there was no progress. The question, just as it was before the economic climate collapsed, is what happens next? SAG seemed to answer that by issuing this statement about the breakdown of talks:
-excerpted-
"We remain committed to avoiding a strike but now more than ever we cannot allow our employers to experiment with our careers. Hollywood actors guild to seek strike
Marathon talks fail to end dispute between 120,000-member SAG, studios
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - The Screen Actors Guild says contract talks with Hollywood studios has failed despite the help of a federal mediator and it will now ask its members to authorize a strike.
The guild said it adjourned talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday after two marathon sessions with the federal mediator.
In a statement, SAG said that it will launch a "full-scale education campaign in support of a strike authorization." The guild represents 120,000 actors.
A spokesman for the movie producers group could not be immediately reached for comment.

I'm laying the 'blame' on no one, but given the economical hell we're all in at the moment, this sounds like SAG have reached the highest peak of insanity and are preparing to fling themselves, and their members, off into the abyss....
With so many people in such dire straits, I wonder if the actors unions will gain the support of the fans and public like the writers did-the times are so bad for so many people that demanding better anything would probably be thought of as ridiculous and greedy-even as a actor in small, supporting parts, any job is better than no job-
