And I'm developing two projects with Vincent D'Onofrio, which he will be directing. (I cast a short film for him a couple years ago that got into the Venice Film Festival.)

Writers push for laws to maintain Internet freedom

AP, 4.22.08

WASHINGTON (AP) — Writers are pushing for legislation to guarantee the Internet's status as an open forum for communication. Partic Verrone, the president of the Writers Guild of America, West, is scheduled to appear today before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee at a hearing entitled "The Future of the Internet."

During the recent writers strike that virtually paralyzed television production for three months, Verrone learned the value of the Internet.

It was his job to keep his members unified during the highly public, 100-day strike, and the Internet proved invaluable.

"When your employers are the same companies that control the media, it's hard to get your message out," he told The Associated Press Monday.

To maintain contact with one another, guild members used blog postings, e-mail and videos. It was the success of that campaign that prompted Verrone to come to Washington and push for legislation that he hopes will guarantee the Internet's status as an open forum for communication. Full article.

SAG signs interim pact

Variety, 4.16.08
By DAVE MCNARY

Guild aims to pact with indies

"After two days of contract negotiations with the majors, the Screen Actors Guild is looking to put some pressure on the studios by signing interim deals with indie feature producers that would allow actors to continue working on select projects even if a strike occurs.[/b] SAG announced late Wednesday that it had reached pacts for nine pics with the Film Department, Mark Gill and Neil Sacker's year-old shingle. But the majors are unlikely to react to SAG's manuever, as Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers member congloms have been steadfastly holding off on starting any projects until after a deal with the guild is clinched.

SAG's guaranteed completion contracts are available only to independent feature productions that have neither financing nor distribution deals with any AMPTP-repped company. Full article.

NBC announces fall lineup

Law & Order: Criminal Intent is currently in negotiations with NBC's corporate sibling USA Network, Silverman said. That discussion has to be completed before we see if there's more life for it on NBC. More

---------------------------------------
TVWeek.com, 4.3.08
By Michele Greppi

-excerpted-

"Mr. Silverman said USA Network holds the fate of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” in its hands. The youngest of the franchises from Dick Wolf only came back this seventh season under a deal that made it original to the NBC Universal cable channel, with encore windows on NBC. With the second half of the current season not even scheduled to start on USA until this summer, the cable network is months away from having to make any decision." more

SAG sets start date for talks

LA Times, 4.2.08
By Richard Verrier and Claudia Eller

The Screen Actors Guild announced Tuesday night that it would begin negotiations with the major studios April 15.

Although its contract expires June 30, the union representing 120,000 actors has faced pressure from its A-list members and the studios to begin immediate negotiations since writers ended their 100-day walkout in February.

"We look forward to productive negotiations," SAG Executive Director Doug Allen said in a statement late Tuesday. He declined to comment further.

The move comes days after SAG's board voted on a package of proposals for talks that are expected to be highly contentious. The union's leaders have vowed to seek better terms for new-media pay than the directors and writers secured and to press for a larger cut of home video revenue -- an issue the studios view as a nonstarter.
