Two Showrunners replace Warren Leight

From Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood, 7.29.08

EXCLUSIVE: Talk about flattering. I've just learned that Warren Leight has been replaced by not one but two executive producers on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Sources tell me that Dick Wolf's plan is to break the 16-episode season into two sets of 8 episodes each. Walon Green will exec produce the 8 episodes starring Vincent D'Onofrio, while Robert Nathan will exec produce the episodes starring newcomer Jeff Goldblum who replaced Chris Noth. And of course Wolf supervises everyone. I broke the news back on May 31st that, within days of USA Networks renewing CI and in the middle of hammering out his new CI deal, Leight jumped to HBO's In Treatment.

A Criminal Omission

TV Guide, 7.24.08

Reader's Jeer of the Week: A Criminal Omission

Jeers to the Emmys! Vincent D’Onofrio should have been nominated for his Emmy-worthy performance in the “Untethered” episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The Emmys also snubbed him last year for “Endgame.” D’Onofrio is such a talented actor, and his portrayal of Detective Robert Goren is so worthy of an Emmy. Why do the Emmys overlook such extremely wonderful talent? ....posted by LOCInumber1fan

Is he leaving?

Is there any truth to the rumor that Vincent D'Onofrio will not be returning to Law & Order: Criminal Intent?

Reader Callie Adams wrote columnist Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily to ask that question and forwarded her reply to us --

Open Letter to Lead Actors

from Peter Coyote

Posted on Deadline Hollywood by Nikki Finke, 7.21.08 --

Dear Colleagues,
A small minority of actors are internationally known, iconic figures, whom audiences flock to see in films and on television. Producers know these actors as the best means to insure return on their investments and reward them appropriately for that security. In addition to talent, these actors have had that extra measure of good fortune, and have been propelled to the very top of our profession. It is to these actors that this letter is addressed, because your good fortune may have insulated you from issues currently afflicting the majority of actors who support you as the ‘friends’, ‘lovers’, ‘cops’, ‘lawyers’, ‘judges’, ‘villains’, and ‘side-kicks in films, and who are also hard-working, talented and skilled professionals.

Since 1990 the earnings of the top leading actors have increased exponentially while the salaries of nearly all other actors have been systematically driven down. In many cases, the earnings of established character actors have been rolled back by 60-70 percent. This occurs, in large part, because the working professional (as opposed to the star) is at a disadvantage when negotiating in the new corporatized production environment. We do not possess a unique, marketable (and often media exploited) brand, and consequently lack the power to make or break the existence or profitability of a film. Consequently, respected, veteran actors with numerous credits and hard-earned “quotes” now routinely receive "take-it-or-leave it" offers, often at “scale”---a beginners wage.

Hey, Emmy voters! Don't forget ..., 7.16.08
by Salon Staff

July 16, 2008 | Here's what we know about the Emmy nominations, which the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will announce on Thursday morning: Katherine Heigl will assuredly not be nominated. We also know -- thanks to an early short-list announcement from the Academy -- which shows are officially in contention for outstanding comedy and drama series mentions.

Another sure thing: We're bound to be disappointed when some deserving soul -- an actor or show that earns our love week after week -- gets overlooked. And so Salon's staff has compiled a list of people we're hoping to see get congratulatory wake-up calls from their agents later this week. From our lips, to Emmy's ears.......

Vincent D'Onofrio, NBC's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (Lead actor in a drama series)
Most actors in procedural shows begin to resemble the civil servants they portray. They show up, hit their marks, clean off their desks and head home. Vincent D'Onofrio is one of the few to suggest that what's going on in his head is as interesting as what's inside the chalk outlines. As detective Robert Goren, he takes a clichéd conception -- the quirky detective-genius who makes connections no one else can -- and invests it with a dark and private meaning. D'Onofrio's mannerisms can be off-putting at first, but he's unafraid to be genuinely strange, and when the emotional stakes deepen -- a rarity for a Dick Wolf show -- D'Onofrio always comes up with the goods. (His scenes with Rita Moreno, as his dying mom, were particularly impressive.) No arresting officer is more arresting to watch.

Thanks Judy!

Ratings highlights from the TV week ended Sunday, per Nielsen Media Research data:

Last night's The Closer and Saving Grace ratings will be reflected in next week's rankings, meaning USA's Burn Notice gets the glory this week as cable's most watched comedy or drama series.
Another of the hot summer shows, Burn Notice's second-season opener averaged 5.4 million—up 35 percent over last summer's inaugural premiere.
Other top cable shows: USA's In Plain Sight (5.1 million),
USA's Law & Order: Criminal Intent (4.9 million) and Lifetime's Army Wives (3.5 million).

Actor's screen break on LOCI

New York Observer, 7.15.08
by Peter Lettre (pastor on episode "Please Note..")

"I’m Talent Now, Thanks to Law & Order"

I was sitting at a warped card table in a church basement on a cold Monday morning last December, surrounded by guys dressed like homeless people, trying to make small talk with Vincent D’Onofrio. He’d called in sick on Thursday and Friday, and the shoot had to be pushed back. He looked uncomfortable in his rumpled suit and tie, his giant frame heaped onto a metal folding chair.

“You feeling better?”

“Yeah, I am.”

He looked at me as if it was still my turn to speak.

“At least you had the weekend to recuperate.”

“That’s true.”

Goldblum a better fit on Law & Order

Calgary Herald, 7.7.08
By Alex Strachan

By now, we've all heard the news: Chris Noth is out, Jeff Goldblum is in on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. So, now who's weirder -- Jeff Goldblum or Vincent D'Onofrio?

Yes, it's true. Chris Noth, one of the original veterans of the Law & Order TV universe, is leaving the force once again.

Noth's place will be taken by Jeff Goldblum when Law & Order: Criminal Intent returns for its eighth season later in the year, the showbiz trades reported last week.

D'Onofrio -- to my mind, a mesmerizing, almost hypnotic performer to watch, though not everyone agrees -- has been chewing the scenery in a major way, as his Det. Goren wanders more and more into his own private universe.

Det. Logan, on the other hand, has been the very picture of normality, which might have been part of the problem. Perhaps Noth-as-Logan was too normal.

Goldblum, on the other hand, with his virtually unlimited repertoire of nervous tics and physical mannerisms, should fit right in on Planet D'Onofrio.

Happy 4th of July!!

Wishing everyone a great holiday weekend with family and friends, and a safe 4th of July out to our servicemen with our sincere thanks.

A poem written by Jill Holmes for her two sons overseas.
Sent in by a reader, thank you!
In all our lives, we never thought
You'd go so far away.
If we had the choice, I hope you know
Close by us you would stay.
But the time had come, a call you heard
To keep our country free.
With your head held high,
No last "goodbyes" a soldier you must be.
So you went away to that foreign land
Where turmoil stirs our peace.
You left behind the land you love
To calm a threatening beast.
Our hearts are filled with so much pride.
We're free because of you.
No words express the love we feel
Or the gratitude that's due.
Tonight you'll sleep in that foreign land
And if you feel like you're alone,
Remember first, a million prayers
Because we'll be waiting for you to come home!

Kate Erbe in the Top Ten Girls of Summer

From, July 1

10.) Alexandra Eames, Law & Order: Criminal Intent (9pm, Sundays, USA)
Yes, Vincent D'Onofrio has the showier role as manic criminal-buster Bobby Goren. But Kathryn Erbe's Eames (who even knew Eames had a first name?) gives Criminal Intent its class -- and, more importantly, a believable anchor for Goren's out-there machinations. It's not easy playing second banana to that kind of scene stealing, but Erbe has been doing it with class since the show's inception. With new episodes this summer on USA, there are even more reasons to appreciate this talented actress. And we do.

Thanks Judy!
