Law & Order: Criminal Intent Pushed Back to Summer 2009
TVGuide, 1.21.09
by Mickey O'Connor
New episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent won't air until summer 2009, according to a USA Network spokesperson, the second such delay in four months. The eighth season was initially scheduled to debut in November 2008, just three months after Season 7 aired. Then, in October, the netlet announced the season would shift to early 2009, presumably January, so they could air all 16 episodes in a row — the same reason they cite for this latest push-back. OK - does anyone have access to the ratings from this past summer? Were the ratings higher then, than they were in the first part of last season?
I have to believe something else is going on behind the scenes. Its my guess that something is going on with the Goldblum/Nicholson episodes that has caused the delay. I'm not talking about Juliane's pregnancy - that could have been worked around (especially since I had seen an interview last year from Alicia Witt that they had discussed Falacci returning).
I'm not happy we are going to be waiting another 3 months to see new eps; I'm not happy that Chris left (I really liked Logan); and I'm not happy with Goldblum's entry (for fear that they are going to blur the line between Goren and Nichols).
I think that the powers that be ( too many to name) are treating Vincent, Katie and all of us shabbily.
Thanks for listening - just needed to vent!
Sigh! So now we know officially. Sigh! It is just as we feared. Sigh! No new LOCI until summer. Sigh! I miss Bobby. Triple sigh!!!
Folks;
We know NOTHING officially, 'till epi 1 through 16 are actually aired...!!
I do agree with Sharon, there's something going on; and "the ratings" is not a major part of it.
USA Network had last summer ratings by mid-autumn.
I can't help but thinking what Bobby would make of this and -most important- what Vincent makes of this.
On the other hand, I'd like to scincerely appreciate USA Network's passion for erraticism, for constantly keeping our minds off the global economiczila....
But seriously, thank God that they're not in charge of anything else, but scheduling our favorite tv show...!!
People, count your blessings...!!

They are treating us shabbily, but there doesn't have to be anything sinister going on. They obviously just don't realise how much we all adore Vincent and want his new episodes. I mean, if they read their own message boards, they probably only see what trolls have to say.
Did LOCI need improved ratings, or are the higher ups hoping to find a way to cancel the show? Both the other Law and Orders are back in the swing. I don't understand NBC/USA's prejudice against LOCI.
One delay, I can understand, but now they're essentially delaying it 8 months from its original start date. I'm worried that such a long hiatus is going to kill the show.
WAHHHHHH.......
WHAT IS GOING ON?????
summer,
hmmm
im sure next week it will be something else
another date and time
another time in space
reminds me of the old hines ketchup commercial
anticipation...keeping us waiting LOL
i for one will wait it out,
atleast we will know each re-run word for word and each scene bit by bit of every single law and order ci by the time the new season airs.
they are doing shoots which means they're still working on shows, thats a good thing.
once the season is complete vince can do his thing behind the camera which im really waiting for. His being the brilliant mind that it is... im sure we have lots to look forward to.
on goldblum...i think he will find his own footing and be so unlike vincent that we may learn to like him.
i think they should just stop announcing it all together until it actually comes on, then they can do an announcement that says...
"oh, by the way, new episodes of law and order criminal intent aired yesterday at 9 on usa and if u missed it, we will show it again in 15 minutes."
this is where we're headed...im sure
then they'll show gomer pyle
surprise, surprise, surprise!
usa....what a much of cartoon characters.....oh yeah..
characters welcome.

The show did do a lot better over the summer. My guess is they'll run it May-August and pair it up with Plain Sight, which is due back in June. (Plain Sight has only 12 eps, so one month less).
Here's the season 7 ratings...

i agree with sharon. there may in fact might be a problem behind the scenes. but not with goldblum and nicholson. but with vincent and kathryn. maybe they are not getting along so well as we may think. in fact a fan of both vincent and kathryn. and mostly kathryn i might add. mentioned while getting an autograph from them. vincent was seen and heard fussing with kathryn about showing up late for work one day. if that's true then that could be the reason for the delay. i could be wrong. maybe we will know why soon.
Oh yes... I'm sure because 'a fan' may have heard 'something' that's the reason season 8 has been delayed.
Good lord, as our New President likes to say...We're in silly season.
Random thoughts, in no particular order. USA network has been known for treating fans like crap, from way back in the Silk Stalkings days. Different regimes, indifferent to the fanbase of its shows...all part of the USA tradition. And now we're talking quality programming-the critics are saying that LOCI is the best-written of the franchise.
I doubt that Vincent and Kate have issues, they've had nearly 8 years to get it together. Kate especially has shown a lot of grace under pressure. I'm ducking as I make this observation, because I know this is a Vincent fansite, but in his efforts for perfection, he can come off as a jerk. They both have said in interviews that they've weathered everything in their personal lives (marriages imploding, Kate's pregnancy, Vincent's health issues and perfectionism) and still do the work and have a mutual respect and a certain amount of affection.
I am interested in Susan's observations, when this incident with the autographs occured. And if Kate was late to work, big deal. She's a single mom who clearly puts her family first. My two or three.... or five cents...worth!
Seems some people have confused the airing schedule with the filming schedule. There's been no delay in the filming schedule and work goes on, same as always. Problems on the set would cause production to shut down.
If anything, I find it a bit of a shame that they can't take advantage of the later premiere date and delay filming a little to get some better spring weather for it. Instead, they are on track for working during Jan. and Feb. which might look a bit out of place when they get shown during the hot summer months. However, I assume that the filming dates are pretty firm and most likely part of the contract.
With USA deciding to keep their reasons for the (second) delay to themselves, people are naturally inclined to start inventing their own and of course, this means the trolls are having a field day trying to wind us all up! There are idiot comments hinting at something 'dark' going on with Vincent, (the busiest actor on the planet it seems) but at least Susan's theory made me laugh out loud. After 8 years working together, I'm sure Vincent and Kate have good days and bad together, just like anyone else, but there is absolutely NO evidence - the stuff beloved of our fictional detectives - to suggest that this is somehow something to do with THEM.
Can we just accept please that since USA are paying good money for an 8th Season of LOCI, they are hardly likely to be sabotaging it, no matter what it looks like from the 'outside'.
Roll on summer :)

I don't think they are delaying broadcasting season 8 epi's because of problems behind the scenes. They have most episodes ready and are filming on schedule as far as I know. I honestly don't believe that when Vincent fusses Katie about being late or stuff like that they will postpone the season. That would be really unprofessional and I also think Vincent and Kate aren't unprofessional like that.
I think it's just a simple reason. It probably comes better in hand for USA to begin season 8 in the Summer. They aren't gonna tell us why, but it could be the ratings, but anyway, it's going to be in their advantage, otherwise they wouldn't wait.
It does suck!
Even IF the alleged 'someone heard something' scenario did take place - which I highly doubt; Vincent is ever the professional! - did it ever occur to whoever heard it, that Vincent might have been kidding? Somehow I doubt the cast have any say-so over when USA schedule LOCI anyway, so we're just going to have to suck it up and WAIT...heaven knows, we should be experts at that by now. I'm not happy about it either, but at least we know we ARE getting an 8th season.
At the very least they could throw us a couple of bones and release seasons 4 & 5 on DVD - don't know what is taking so long there either.
I just don't appreciate the way that CI is treated like a poor step-child while the Mothership & SVU get all the glory. (And frankly, I think the mothership is a pitiful representation of how good the show was years ago).
Still venting!
I must agree, this is very distressing. Why season 4 and 5 are not released on DVD seems to be a mystery. I've worn out 1,2, and 3 so much that they had to be replaced. And the re-runs are at such odd times; what can a girl do? Just keep playing the dvds and others that I've taped.
Maybe.....
USA is planning to launch a
new series this summer and
want a TOP rated show (L&O CI)
to air just before it in their
line-up giving it a better
chance to catch on with a
strong lead in.
wow,
im sure you've realized im kind of a new kid on the block but i find this very interesting....
your comments, complaints and compliments
all of u seem to have a passion for the show and the people involved.
i just had a thought...maybe they're having problems with time slots.
maybe they have to let what ever show(s) that are taking their 9 or 10 pm time slot run their course until loci can have it back.
i dont know much about working in television but i would think that if a show has been scheduled to air lets say at 10 on sundays and there are 16 episodes, but they wanted to air loci during that shows season, they would have to remove it to let loci in at that time, right?
so perhaps they are just going to let the show that got the slot "first" play out its season which must end in the summer
you know like, tommy had dibs on using the bathroom first and he's not going to stop half way through to let joey have turn so...unfortunately, joey will just have to do the pee pee dance and wait his turn.
the aboved named being usa execs of course
baygirl
I hardly think anything the actors do or don't do has any effect at all on what USA does. The actors have no say so on when a show is scheduled or filmed, or even if a show is cancelled or renewed. So even if there ever were problems on the set, even it hasn't affected the filming (which is HASN'T)it certainly wouldn't affect the scheduling.
I also don't think it is fair to bring up an incident which may or may not have happened, or may have been taken out of context.
Vincent is a professional, and is the reason the show is so good.
Hey Baygirl, nice insight. Something like that seems very logical. That's exactly what I meant when I said that USA would have a simple reason to postpone the show.
Let's hope it's something like that!
This delay is very disappointing. But as usual, we will wait for our beloved Vincent as long as it takes!
