Heldenfels' mailbag: McLeod has a Web site
By Rich Heldenfels, Beacon Journal popular culture writer

"...Q: Law & Order: Criminal Intent was advertised as returning on Nov. 7 on USA Network. But it never appeared. I don't even see it advertised anywhere. Is it coming back?

A: Eventually. It was first set for last fall, then delayed until early 2009, when USA planned to run 16 new episodes without reruns interrupting.

But it has been delayed again, with a USA rep saying new episodes are linked in April or May, when it can be promoted along with several other USA shows offering new telecasts. Fox News recently blamed the delay on problems with new episodes starring Jeff Goldblum, who joined the show after Chris Noth departed. The network insisted ''production is going very well'' and did not affect the rescheduling..."

Criminal Intent finest of Law & Order series

Windsor Star, 1.24.09
by Alex Strachan

If all you knew about New York was what you learned from watching Law & Order and its innumerable spinoffs, you could be forgiven for wondering how there could possibly be any people left in that city, what with all the murders in the shows.

Tonight, CTV is handing off much of its prime time schedule to repeats of the least known, but in some ways most intriguing shows, in the Law & Order universe, Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

That's the spinoff originally developed by Montreal native and McGill alum Rene Balcer, who is now the supervising producer, head writer and de facto showrunner of the original Law & Order -- or "the mother ship," as creator Dick Wolf likes to call it.

Balcer originally conceived Law & Order: Criminal Intent as a Columbo-esque reverse on the standard Law & Order formula. Criminal Intent was designed to be a study in criminal psychology rather than a straight murder mystery. Who commits the crime isn't as important as why.

The fun -- if you can call it that -- is in watching Vincent D'Onofrio's Det. Robert Goren and, in more recent seasons, Chris Noth's Det. Mike Logan, trap the perpetrator in a game of cat-and-mouse. Full article

LOCI solid in syndication, tops at USA

1.18.09 Network-Proven: Names Pull in Syndie Dollars

...A new entrant to the Most Bankable List, Wolf, with his “Law & Order” franchise, is taking advantage of the limited number of highly anticipated sitcoms entering into the marketplace.

“Law & Order: Criminal Intent” arrived in daily syndication—a rarity for an hourlong drama—last season to solid ratings. Based on that success, NBC Universal Television Distribution is giving “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” the same treatment for 2009.

Burn Notice Makes White-Hot Return To USA

...USA had the top six telecasts of the day among viewers 25 to 54, with Burn Notice as well as NCIS, House, Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Law & Disorder at Criminal Intent

This should clear up the confusion.....

Fox News, 1.23.09

It seems like things are pretty shaky these days over at NBC’s "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

The problem: recently appointed producer Robert Nathan, who was brought in to run the episodes featuring newcomer Jeff Goldblum, is out after shooting two chapters. There’s word that Ed Zuckerman, producer of the original "Law & Order," is taking his place.

But things are not that simple. According to sources, Goldblum’s character has not really emerged yet on screen. "The two episodes they have are terrible," says an insider who says that everyone who worked with Nathan is gone as well.

The result is that USA Studios, which airs the show before it goes to NBC, has postponed the season premiere for a second time. The original prrmiere was set for last November, then moved to March. Now it might be in the late spring or early summer.

The irony is that the eight episodes featuring Vincent D’Onofrio are moving along pretty well, and should be finished on time. The hold up is all with the eight starring Goldblum. They simply don’t exist so far.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent Pushed Back to Summer 2009

TVGuide, 1.21.09
by Mickey O'Connor

New episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent won't air until summer 2009, according to a USA Network spokesperson, the second such delay in four months. The eighth season was initially scheduled to debut in November 2008, just three months after Season 7 aired. Then, in October, the netlet announced the season would shift to early 2009, presumably January, so they could air all 16 episodes in a row — the same reason they cite for this latest push-back. Kathryn Erbe Made Better by Motherhood

Celebrity Baby Blog, 1.18.08

Motherhood has transformed Law and Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe, making her “a better person in every way.” In a new interview with OK! the 42-year-old actress says that since welcoming daughter Maeve, 13, and son Carson, 5, she’s become “much less self-centered” as her attention has instead shifted to her children.

“My heart grows every day through struggling and love of my kids. It helps balance everything else – the work and the world. It helps keep me grounded and in perspective of what is really meaningful to me. It helps me be conscious of the way that I conduct myself in my relationships and in the world.”

Her comments came while attending the Year of the Mutt-i-Gree gala on Tuesday in New York City. Last year, Kathryn adopted a dog, Lilah, from the the North Shore Animal League — something which also “changed the whole dynamic of the family.”

"Brooklyn's Finest"

Another cameo in 'Brooklyn's Finest', now screening at the Sundance Film Festival.

3.11.09 - Vincent is credited as Carlo - thanks Sharon!

excerpted from Variety, 1.17.09

Not that "Brooklyn's Finest" is drab or visually lazy; it is, however, a narrative muddle. Three main characters are introduced: First, Eddie (Richard Gere) wakes up in the morning and puts a gun barrel in his mouth, rehearsing for suicide. Second, Sal (Ethan Hawke) -- after chatting amiably in a car with what we assume is a fellow gangster (Vincent D'Onofrio) -- shoots the guy in the face and robs him of a bag of cash. And third, a very slick, very dangerous Tango (Don Cheadle) is cruising Brownsville, clearly at ease with thug life, orchestrating the running of big bags of coke. But all three are actually cops, serving at various levels of the NYPD hierarchy. And all three are poster boys for the corrupting influence of easy money, no respect and a vision of the future that's begging them to sell out.

No information on D'Onofrio's appearance.
Brooklyn's Finest cast includes Ethan Hawke (Staten Island, Chelsea Walls, Newton Boys) and Lili Taylor (below) (Mystic Pizza)

Lili Taylor as Hawke's wife in "Brooklyn's Finest".

Antoine Fuqua directs Richard Gere in Brooklyn's Finest.

Goldblum Gives the Skinny on New 'CI'

1.8.09 - TV INSIDER: Goldblum Gives the Skinny on New 'CI'

With the eighth season of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" just around the corner -- it premieres Feb. 5 -- soon viewers will get to judge for themselves how well Jeff Goldblum follows the tough act of his hugely-popular predecessor, Chris Noth.

Some of Goldblum's own talents are being incorporated into his character, Det. Zach Nichols. The actor tells us, for instance, that Nichols plays jazz piano, and tends to play when mulling questions pertaining to his cases. Goldblum is a jazz pianist in real life. Nichols will have quirks. Wouldn't people be disappointed if there was a Jeff Goldblum character without quirks at this point? Full article

SAG: No Good Reason to Strike

HuffingtonPost, 1.2.09
Jonathan Handel, [Entertainment Attorney at TroyGould in Los Angeles]

There's turmoil planned for the upcoming Jan. 12-13 SAG National Board meeting, reports the LA Times. SAG's National Executive Director Doug Allen and the current negotiating committee may find themselves bounced out unceremoniously by the moderates--or they may not. The strike authorization vote, postponed from its original Jan. 2 mailing date, may get canceled altogether--or it might not.

In light of this uncertainty, it's still critical to ask whether a strike authorization and possible strike make sense. SAG's hardline leaders and their supporters have made a lot of statements in support of both an authorization and a strike itself. Do their statements stand up to scrutiny? I say no, but you be the judge. Here are SAG's most oft-repeated arguments, and my analysis.

Who is that humble actor?

From Crazy Days and Nights, 12.22.08

Blind Items Revealed

December 22, 2008

#1 - This kindness is not anything spectacular, but since it happened this morning, I thought I would share it. B-/C+ television actor with about six years on the same crime show. Also one of my all-time favorite characters from one of the biggest films of all time. Anyway, our actor was in line at LAX this morning at the ticket counter with about 100 "everyday people" in front of him. People in line were asking for photographs and getting autographs and so a ticket agent asked our actor if he wanted to be moved to the front of the line. Our actor said, "Why?" The ticket agent said they had a special policy for celebrities which caused our actor to say, "Let me know when you see one."

#1 - Vincent D'Onofrio

Thanks Linda!
